  3. Vehicle Design Module • 9 Teams Formed – selected by staff • 2 JCB Originated Projects • 7 Other Projects – Students Originated and approved by staff

  4. Vehicle Design Module • Projects run over 2 Semesters • Interim “Specification Report” (November) • Final Report (March)

  5. Vehicle Design Module • Panel of 5 visiting tutors who are experienced automotive and off highway engineers

  6. Vehicle Design Module • Tutors role • Part C reports are marked by tutors and results count for final degree

  7. Vehicle Design Module • Students on JCB projects sign a “confidentially agreement” – IPR remains with JCB • Presentation to JCB staff at end of project

  9. What does Industry gain? FOR JCB / INDUSTRY • Opportunity to influence, assess and recruit capable students • Access to research to solve problems important to the company • Raise profile of the company with students and future graduates

  10. What does Industry gain? • 4. Opportunity to meet people with new ideas and approaches to solving issues. Broadens contacts. • 5. Opportunity to shape and enhance what students are learning. And to discover what really appeals to them! “On their wavelength” • 6. A big advantage over competitors that don’t do it!

  11. Benefits to Students/Academia • Access to up-to-date specialist engineering knowledge particularly in design • Relate the theory to real world issues / projects. Students have a realistic design experience • Interact with professional engineers • Visit a working site or factory • Makes students more employable

  12. SUSTAINABILITY • Long term commitment – in this case JCB • Easier with organisations where engineers have some autonomy! • Support from Loughborough University, Aeronautical and Automotive Department and EngCETL - with minimum of bureaucracy
