Summer Programs • Intramural Research Program of the National Institute on Drug Abuse: Recruitment & Training Program for Under-represented Populations An intramural program that provides training opportunities for students who are interested in the scientific basis of drug abuse.  A limited number of positions are available each summer.  Selection is very competitive. DEADLINE: Completed packets are due in entirety March 1 of each year. • The Leadership Alliance Summer Research - Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) • 8-10 week summer program that provides undergraduates with training and mentoring research and prepares them to pursue competitive applications to graduate schools. Designed as a gateway to ongoing resources, mentoring and professional networks to support all participants along their chosen career path. Designed specifically for undergraduates interested in applying to PhD or MD-PhD programs. Every element of your complete application must be received no later than midnight of February 1, 2013.

Summer Research with NIDA • NIDA facilitates matching of students and investigators • Provides 8-10 week research placement with a NIDA investigator • Announcement released in late fall • Application due date is winter • Selections made in spring • Students start in June Excerpted from Beatty, 2012

  7. Selected Student Programs Opportunities Available • Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research (SIP). Program Description: Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. The NIH consists of the 240-bed Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center and more than 1200 laboratories/research projects located on the main campus in Bethesda, MD and the surrounding area as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; Phoenix, AZ; Hamilton, MT; Framingham, MA; and Detroit, MI.  NOTE: the number of positions in Phoenix, Hamilton, Framingham, and Detroit is limited. • Internships cover a minimum of eight weeks, with students generally arriving at the NIH in May or June. The NIH Institutes and the Office of Intramural Training & Education sponsor a wide range of summer activities including lectures featuring distinguished NIH investigators, career/professional development workshops, and Summer Poster Day. Excerpted from Beatty, 2012

  8. 2012 Community College Summer Enrichment Program (CCSEP) • In summer the NIH will  offer a special SIP program designed to recruit community college students to the NIH.  Students in CCSEP can take advantage of all the opportunities available to other SIP interns. In addition, they will make a commitment to completing an enrichment curriculum.  Excerpted from Beatty, 2012

  9. More Programs • Recruitment and Training for Under-represented Populations (RTURP) Program (NIDA, Baltimore, MD) • Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP) • Introduction to Cancer Research Careers (ICRC) • Werner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program (Frederick, MD) • Cancer Research Interns (CRI) Summer Program • Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research for Veterinary Medical Students • Excerpted from Beatty, 2012

  10. More Programs • Diversity in Vision Research & Opthalmology (DIVRO) • NIDDK Office of Minority Health Research Coordination (OMHRC) Summer Internship Program • NIDCR Summer Dental Student Award • Office of Research Facilities Summer Intern Program (opportunities in trades, architecture, and physical sciences • Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP)

  11. More programs • Werner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program Brief Program Description: The Werner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program (WHK SIP) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at Frederick is designed to expose high school seniors to research and administrative management in a health care environment. The scientific interns experience the basic methods of biomedical research through "hands-on" laboratory training. The students in the Internships in Support of Science/Research are assigned projects in budget, personnel, information technology, graphics and media. Program Start & End Dates: June to May (year long:  paid 8 weeks in summer, volunteer during school year) Who is eligible:  high school students who have successfully completed their junior year

  13. More Programs • The Maternal and Child Health Careers/Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement (MCHC/RISE-UP Program This program provides opportunities for enhanced public health and related training to undergraduate students from underrepresented populations.  The program takes place at three sites, one each at Johns Hopkins University, the University of South Dakota, and the University of Southern California.

  14. More Programs • The University of Pittsburgh Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study (MIDAS) Center of Excellence This summer research opportunity is for undergraduate students in the field of computational modeling and simulation of infectious diseases. Through this ten-week Summer Research Program, participants will gain an appreciation of major research questions being raised at the intersection of public health, biological science, and computer technology and become acclimated to the rigors of scientific research and graduate education. Women and underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

  15. More Programs • Smith College Summer Science and Engineering Program (SSEP) for high school girls This program runs from July 1 through July 28 at Smith College in Northampton, MA.  It is open to girls of all nationalities.  There is a charge, but some financial aid is available.

  16. More Programs • Student Volunteer Program at the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy Opportunities in a variety of areas for college students who are U.S. citizens. • Summer Program in Quantitative Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health For college undergraduates who would like to learn how quantitative methods can be applied in the study of human health.  SURF, Summer Undergraduate Research FellowshipAt the National Institute of Standards and Technology, in Gaithersburg, MD or Boulder, CO.

  17. More Programs • Riken Brain Science Institute Summer Program Opportunities for advanced trainees to complete either a two-month laboratory internship or a seven-day intensive lecture course just outside Tokyo, Japan.  Funds may be available to support those with financial need.  • University of Maryland School of Public Health Summer Training and Research (STAR) Program This program is designed to provide traditionally under-represented undergraduate students with 2 consecutive summers of a 10-week research training and career development program to enhance their potential to apply for and complete graduate degrees in biomedical and behavioral science relevant to preventing and treating cardiovascular disease.  The application is not yet available.

  18. Summer Science Fellowship late June to early AugustGeorge Mason University, University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University offered through the APA Science Directorate. An expenses-paid, intensive summer training program, the purpose of SSF is to allow up to 12 talented students to be placed in the psychology laboratories of some of the most outstanding researchers in the Washington, DC area for up to 6 weeks. The SSF program gives students an opportunity to explore the intellectual, personal, and social processes of scientific inquiry and to experience cutting-edge psychological research through hands-on laboratory activities. SSF offers promising students the opportunity to equip themselves with skills essential to succeed in graduate school, and gives students who plan to pursue advanced degrees in psychological science the opportunity to be mentored by nationally-known faculty. The six-week program is expected to run from late June to early August. APA will pay students a summer salary, as well as cover all travel and living expenses. This should make the program financially feasible for most college students.Eligibility is strictly limited to rising college seniors (what does this mean?) at US or Canadian colleges and universities. Applicants should be psychology majors, although students with related preparation may apply if they expect to enter a psychological science graduate program. International students enrolled in US or Canadian colleges are eligible; US citizenship is not required. Students from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.  www.apa.org/science/ssf.html (Excerpted from Hailstorks, 2008)
