  5. Holy Spirit • The Holy Spirit is present throughout the Old Testament • Co-Eternal with God the Father and God the Son. • Holy Spirit the is the power behind the mission of Jesus, which the Church continues

  6. Pentecost • Jewish feast = Fiftieth day after Easter • Read Acts of the Apostles 2:1-41 • Three signs of the coming of the spirit: • Fire • Wind • New languages

Why might these be good signs for the Holy Spirit? • powerful, uncontrollable forces, like the Holy Spirit • sources of Transformation, like the Holy Spirit • can promote life • Old Testament connections to God • burning Bush, wind over waters of creation, whisper that spoke to Elijah in cave.

Power of the Holy Spirit • Acts 1:8 - Foreshadowing of coming of spirit • “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.” • What does the world see as powerful? • money, fame, weapons, education • What is the power of the Holy Spirit? • love, faith, God • Holy spirit gives the power to transform our lives

  9. Holy Spirit’s Mission • Builds, animates, and sanctifies the Church • Build – Through preaching, community & individual faith growth. • Animate – Gives life, like a soul gives life to a body. Transform! • Sanctify – Make holy through Sacraments, virtues, gifts. • - Gift of faith begins in Baptism, which initiates people into the Body of Christ.

  10. Holy Spirit’s Mission • Ultimately the mission of the Church, empowered by the Holy Spirit, is to bring all people into communion with the Trinity.

  12. People of God • Book of Mr. Schafer • We belong to God and God takes care of us • Give your family a good name • We are responsible for keeping the name of God holy

  13. Light and Salt • People notice when we live lives of joy, peace, patience, and love (or when we don’t) • Share the light of Christ. • Spice things up. • Preserve goodness, create meaningful experiences.

  14. Body of Christ • Sharing the good and the bad. • When one is praised, all are praise. When one suffers, all suffer. • We are in this together. • We are responsible for each other • Represent • We are the tangible presence of Christ in the world today.

  15. Bride of Christ • Jesus is the loving spouse who continually loves the Church, no matter what. • We are called to unconditional love toward God and neighbor, and be totally united.

  16. Temple of God • People come to know God through us • God’s spirit resides in all of us after Baptism and Confirmation.

  17. Flock • Stick together with good sheep • Strength in numbers • Know and follow the voice of the shepherd • Trust revelation for parts of life beyond explanation.

  18. Field / Olive Grove • Bearing fruit • Olive trees take 13 years of nurture before they bear fruit • Work in the garden, but trust God for growth • We plant, but God gives the increase

  19. Building / Household of God • Safe place to gather • Place to feel at home, comfortable, be yourself • Do your chores • Everyone has a role to play to make the household function.
