  1. MMS15 Interactive Knowledge Base (IKB) on NDE of Composites Mid Term Review Martin Wall National NDT Centre, Gordon Bishop NetComposites, Anne Birt Qinetic Culham Science CentreThursday 15 January 2004

  2. MMS15 IKB on NDE of Composites • Development of an Interactive Knowledge Base (IKB) on NDE of composites • Transfer of NDE expertise across industry • A single focal point for industry on NDE of composites…the IKB ….on your desk • An NDE forum for exchange of practical and new information (Technology transfer) • A live IKB that will evolve and grow with time • Inclusive of all industry sectors and NDE methods. • A step change in the use of NDE by UK industry. A gain in the quality of composite components. www.mms15.cominfo@mms15.com Members Area: UserID mms15userPassword iagmms

  3. Achievements • New ‘generic’ IKB software developed • IKB features such as Recommend a Technique (RAT) updated for new IKB. Evolution in user interface. • IKB beta version implemented on NetComposites site www.netcomposites.com. Separate development at version www.mms15.com • Substantive information gathered from partners and industry on composite NDE. Valuable case studies. • Useful interaction and exchangewith MMS13 • Increasing information input to demo IKBs • Active industry participation (25+) companies. Good dissemination through project web site and noticeboard

  4. Achievements - Dissemination • Project outputs well received and positive feedback from IAG • Good and sustained IAG membership (25+) across MMS15 and MMS13 • Good ‘buy-in’ from industry. Several case studies, direct and in-kind support, high level of information supplied. • Spin-off to other projects e.g. MMS5, IKB on FPSOs for HOIS, HSE gas turbine IKB, new cross initiation of industry workgroup on composite defect assessment and NDE. • Large number of visits (30+). Input to courses and conferences. • Good interactions with MMS13: IAG, collaboration, case studies, information exchange.

  5. Problems/ Lessons Learnt • Handling of large volume of data • Coding, archiving to portable hard drive • Compatibility between two software versions • Largely resolved, upload routines • Significant effort in formatting of data • Procedures streamlined • Consistency and auditing of data • High level audit routine, trials, feedback, expert review • Independence, balance, consensus and traceability of data • Clear identification of source, review • Need to get more experience input from end-users

  6. Next 12 Months • Improvements to user interface: rolling menus, information presentation • Completion of Recommend RAT feature (Task 3) • Continued retrieval and formatting of data (Task 2) • Rising increase in information in demo IKBs • Additional case studies with IAG and MMS13 (Task 6) • Deliver launch version of IKB (Tasks 7, 8) • Industry feedback and evaluation (Task 8) • Inspection Value (IVM) and links to POD models

  7. Future (beyond MMS15) • Dissemination via NetComposites site www.netcomposites.com/ikb • Update funded by secondary income • Identify gaps in NDE capability • ‘Spin-off’ or studio projects with industry to enhance specific areas • Tie in to relevant MPP programmes : F2, F12 etc. • Ongoing composite NDE working group?
