Glycolysis. Daniel Rysavy. Cell Respiration. Cells get energy from oxidation of nutrients, often glucose. If the Glucose is a substrate, then the 1 st stage of cell respiration is glycolysis. The pathway is catalyzed by enzymes in the cytoplasm. Glycolysis.

  2. Cell Respiration • Cells get energy from oxidation of nutrients, often glucose. • If the Glucose is a substrate, then the 1st stage of cell respiration is glycolysis. • The pathway is catalyzed by enzymes in the cytoplasm.

  3. Glycolysis • Metabolic pathway that converts glucose C6H12O6into pyruvate CH3COCOOH • It uses ADP and NAD • First, at he expense of 2 ATPs two phosphate molecules are attached. It is then split into two 3-carbon sugar phosphates. These are then at expense of 4 ADPs and 2 NADs converted to pyruvates.

  4. Products • 2 NADHs, 4 ATPs, and 2 Pyruvates • Glycolysis can occur under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. • If aerobic – pyruvate is even more oxidized, and it yields more ATP • If anaerobic – pyruvate is transformed into lactic acid.
