Why integrate CALL into EPC? • The “Big Picture” • Jan’s Management Plan & Matthew’s strategic goal: competitive advantage - not technology for technology’s sake • CALL is not new to Idiomas! • Strengths • Good environment: Learning Centre • IT literate teachers: enthusiastic, experienced • Weaknesses • Loss of the “old computer room” • Lack of IT training / development • Opportunities • Recognised as quality provider of CALL & IT • Threats • External: Wall Street, Opening, Net Languages, EF • Internal: ESADE - LIC&MBA, Law materials on webs

A simple methodological framework • Evaluation • Review pilot • Report back - INSEC day • Development • Pilot CALL in EPCs with “IT Crusaders” • Oct 2001 - Jan 2002 • Implementation • Integrate CALL in selected EPCs • CALL integrated into the language course • - NOT as a replacement / add-on / supplement

  8. The impact of change (1) • NBLT Patrikis (1997:175) notes that “a simple and often heard phrase like the ‘integration of computers into the curriculum’ is a false lead. Once introduced in any meaningful way, the computer changes everything”

  9. The impact of change (2) • Debski (1997:41) calls the relationship of language teaching and technology “ecological change” because any significant factor in one of its components may lead to changes in the remaining factor”

  10. The dimensions of curricular development Changes in pedagogical values • Markee (1997) observes that changes in materials do not occur independently. Instead, they must co-occur with changes in methodological teaching skills and philosophical values.
