  3. Variation • Variation is the angle between the true meridian and the magnetic meridian. Therefore, in the Northern Hemisphere, variation is the angle between true north and magnetic north. • Lines drawn on a chart joining places having the same variation are called isogonic lines. • Lines drawn on a chart joining places having no variation are called agonic lines.
