  1. English settlement of the New World 1585 Raleigh establishes Roanoke. ???????????

  2. Virginia Jamestown 1607 • Joint-stock company, London Company. This was a forerunner of the modern corporation. • Virginia Company charter: Gave those settlers the same rights as those still in England. • Intent was to make money for the company.

  3. Early Mistakes • Too few farmers and artisans. Too many “gentlemen”. • Located the colony in a low marshy area. • Searched for gold instead of a way to survive. • Many died from disease, starvation, and malnutrition. ????

  4. Captain John Smith • “He who shall not work shall not eat”. • Assumed control of the expedition. • Secured food from the Indians, built fortifications, planted food crops, and stocked firewood. • 1607 Captured by Powhatan and “executed”. Pocahontas “saves”.

  5. The “Starving time” • 1609-1610. Forced to eat whatever they could. • Saved only by arrival of reinforcements from England. • By 1625, 6800 of 8000 had perished

  6. Anglo-Powhatan Wars • Lord De La Warr leads an active campaign of terror and war against the natives. • 1614. First peace treaty to end hostilities. Pocahontas marries John Rolfe. • 1644. Second Powhatan War. Unable to coexist. The treaty that ended to war in 1646, banished the Chesapeake Indians from their ancestral lands. Do we see a pattern developing here?

  7. Tobacco In 1612, John Rolfe began cultivating tobacco. This: • gave the colonists a cash crop that grew wel • l in Virginia soil. • Pushed settlements westward. • Limited the prosperity of Virginia to one crop. • 1619. First black slaves sold.
