  8. To a bit bigger…… Inverness

  9. Use of IT for clinical work

  10. Use of IT for academic work

  11. How much work do students do? June – December 2008

  12. How is the work graded?

  13. SDS Staff Senior dental officers Locum staff University staff A Hall (weekly) B Watt (daily – admin) WP Saunders (twice) JR Radford (weekly) Who works there?

  14. Why no University staff? • Too busy • Too far away • Need additional contract • Need Occ Health Clearance (and injections) • Don’t want to be away from home • Nothing to do with me – but they will have to do it the Dundee way • I can’t do that type of clinical work x

  15. Quality assurance • Student questionnaires • Staff questionnaires • Patient questionnaires • National Outreach Days (pan Scotland) • It’s our turn next • Dundee Clinical outreach days

  16. Dundee Clinical Days

  17. Working with other schools • Good links between Dundee and Glasgow and Aberdeen • Many staff have worked in at least two institutions, some in all three. • Familiarity with teaching methods and clinical teaching

  18. Teaching policies Glasgow 2000 Dundee 2008

  19. Helping each other out • Outreach / Clinical dentistry in Scotland • Not Glasgow vs Dundee vs Aberdeen • 2008-2009 Glasgow have a big year and insufficient Outreach available • 2009-2010 Dundee have a big year • Aberdeen need clinical facilities before the new school building opens

  20. Inverness

  21. Inverness + UHI • 14 chairs • 6 BDS and 8 BSc (Dental therapy with UHI) • Therapists don’t start clinic until Jan 09 • NHS Highland has huge access problems • Sept 08 - Dec 08 • 12 BDS students (6 Glasgow, 6 Dundee) • Jan 09 – May 09 • 6 BDS students (Glasgow) • Sept 09 – • 6 BDS students (Dundee)

  22. B&B (£26pppn) 3 eggs max at breakfast

  23. Dundee & Glasgow on the same clinic • Start with 6 chairs • Students in pairs – 1 Dundee and 1 Glasgow • Taught different things • Different strengths • Peer teaching (psst …. try it this way!) • Develop to 12 chairs • Dundee side and Glasgow side • Some social interaction • Glasgow there for more time than Dundee

  24. Dundee & Glasgow on the same clinic !!!!! • Benefits • Genuine student interaction • Keen to demonstrate what they know • Easier to learn from a fellow student • Problems • Outreach staff are ‘nice’ • Academic staff – less so • More sensitivity is required when teaching students from another school. • Easy to be critical of what students say

  25. Dundee and Aberdeen • Dundee Outreach clinic at Aberdeen • 1st yr BDS Aberdeen with 5th yr BDS Dundee • Good peer teaching • Too many students at Aberdeen (8 chairs) • 8 Dundee students (+ 6 from Inverness Jan 08) • 2 Dundee Therapy students • 8 Aberdeen BDS students • 24 STUDENTS IN AN 8 CHAIR CLINIC

  26. Collaboration is good …but it should be planned rather than a necessity …dental students don’t need more than 3 eggs for breakfast
