  1. Instructions to Install Safari OpenAccess May 28, 2008

  2. What is Safari OpenAccess? • Also called Safari ODBC or just Safari • Product from Interactive Software Systems, Inc. • Purchased by the Ohio Department of Education for use by all OECN State Software Users. • Allows you the capability of pulling district data directly into applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel. • Allows you to analyze, sort, total, create form letters and labels, etc. once the data is loaded into an application.

  3. Requirements for installing Safari OpenAccess • PC running Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP • 32-bit Applications (Microsoft Office 97 or later) • Microsoft Basic and Microsoft Query (These should have been installed during the Microsoft Office software installation, however Microsoft Query sometimes is missed during installation because it has to be selected.)

  4. How do I know if Microsoft Query is installed? • Open Microsoft Excel then click on data and then ‘import external data’, ‘create new query’ or ‘new database query’. • If Query is not installed you will receive a message stating so.

  5. What should I do if Microsoft Query is not installed? • Microsoft Query can be installed off of the Microsoft Office Installation CD. • Contact your tech coordinator or contact SEOVEC Fiscal Services for assistance.

Other examples of connection names you could use include USAS, EIS, EMIS, EMIS OCT08, EMIS JUN08, etc. Server Name should be seovca.seovec.org to connect to the Alpha Leave password fields blank Enter the fields indicated above. For User Name enter your username for the Alpha system. DO NOT enter your password. Click ‘Advanced Setup’ to enter the pathname for the data you will be accessing.

  24. The Port Number and Service will already be filled in, DO NOT change these values. Enter the path name based on the data you are going to access, this name must be accurate in order to properly connect to your data. The path name will vary based on the data you are accessing. The next screen lists the various pathnames that can be used.

  25. List of Pathnames • oecn$:safari usas • Uniform School Accounting System • oecn$:safari usps • Uniform School Payroll System • oecn$:safari eis • Equipment Inventory System • oecn$:safari emis [db_code] • EMIS users may specify an optional “database code” to indicate which database they want to use, if no code is specified the default database will be accessed. If the database code is used, multiple connection names for EMIS can be created. • Example: oecn$:safari emis oct08 • oct08 would access the October 2008 database files specifically

  26. Access Level • You can only connect to data through Safari that you currently have access to on the Alpha. • For example, if you only have access to USAS files, you will NOT be able to connect to the USPS, EMIS, or EIS data.
