Think of this equation as a balance scale.

Whatever you do to one side has to be done to the other to keep it balanced!


Ex. 1 Solve x – 3 = 2

x – 3 = 2 Write the equation!

+ 3 = + 3 Add 3 from x + 0 = 5 each side to “undo”

the subtraction of x = 53 on the left side.

The difference between the number of people that visit Great Adventure on a Saturday and the number of people that visit the park on a Wednesday is 1,465. Saturday is the busiest day of the week. There are 4,320 visitors on Wednesday. How many visitors are there on Saturday? Write and solve an equation.


x – 4,320 = 1,465 Write the equation.

+ 4,320 = + 4,320 Subtract 120 from each side.

x = 5,785 Simplify.

There were 5,785 visitors to Great Adventure on Saturday.

Check 5,785 – 4,320 = 1,465
