  1. Electronic Parts ABE425 Engineering Measurement Systems

  2. Experiment board for 40-pin DIP PICs DB25 pin connector

  3. PIC Microcontroller • 40 pin Dual in Line Package (DIP) Pin 40 Pin 21 Notch Pin 1 Pin 20

  4. Resistors • Values • Color coding • Power (Watt) • Power = U*I • Purpose: Control current and voltages

  5. Variable resistor • Aka Potentiometer • Aka trim pot • Bottom pin is the wiper (runner) • Value is 102 • This means 1 0 with 2 zeros • This one is 1000 (Ohm) • Avoid making short cuts !!

  6. Capacitors • Small caps count from pico-Fahrad • This one is 10 pF • Remember • Pico =10^-12 • Nano =10^-9 • Micro =10^-6 • Milli =10^-3

  7. Electrolytic capacitors • These have a polarity!! • Short wire is always GND! • This one is a radial version Filter, for instance to remove noise. Block DC components in signals

  8. Axial Electrolytic capacitor • Mind the polarity, wires can not be compared

  9. Voltage regulators • 7805 Regulator ($1,50) • These can get hot! Put a heat sink if neccesary • Max output current about 1.5A Heat sink IN GND 5V OUT Purpose: Keep constant output voltage while input voltage varies (even oscillates)

  10. 741 OpAmp Purpose: Amplify signals, act as a buffer

  11. DC-DC converters • Expensive ($50)

  12. Light emitting diodes • This is a diode, which happens to light up • Flat spot indicates GND • Short wire indicates GND • Avoid making short cuts, always put a resistor in series (470  (Ohm)) • LED needs about 10 mA to light up

  13. Diodes • Conduct current in only one direction (forward bias) • Block current in other direction (reverse bias) • Stripe indicates the Cathode (“cold side)

  14. Single row header • For making connections

  15. Crystals • Crystal 12 MHz • Need capacitors to work • Oscillator version 40MHz • just apply Vcc, no caps needed Purpose: Generate very precise clocks for telecommunication, microcontrollers etc.

  16. CMOS chip (4050) • Specs: CMOS Logic Data book Purpose: Amplify signals, act as a buffer

  17. Homework • Find the datasheets of the following chips • Give the pins for the Vcc (power) and GND • 741 OpAmp • 14050B CMOS Buffer • 7400 NAND • 7404 HEX Inverter • 7413 4 input NAND • 7432 AND

  18. Jumpers BJT transistors Crystal Resistors 7805 7-seg displays Elcaps LCD Sockets Resistor Network DIP switch 3mm LED Trim pot Processor Capacitor

  19. The End
