  1. Context • Contemporary Film: modern, stands out from the normal, different structure, ideas, themes. • Aims to promote realism: The representation in art or literature of objects, actions, or social conditions as they actually are, without idealization or presentation in abstract form.

Realism: “Middle” Australians • Aims to capture “everyday” Australians – “middle” Australia: at a point in their lives where they are reflecting on their achievements and lives to this point. • Are they happy? • Are they doing what they want to do? • Have they done what they planned? • If they haven’t, why not? • What has happened to prevent them from this?

  3. Central Theme: Fear • What is a fear? • Where do fears come from? • How is fear generated and sustained?

Short Film: ‘Living With Happiness’ • A young mother finds herself gripped by an overwhelming pessimism - a state of mind that negatively colours the perception of life – that threatens to consume her. Only a freak accident on a lonely beach may be the key to her future happiness. • What is meant by the title? Is “happiness” being described asa burden? Or are we being pressured to be happy? • What are the fears of the main characters? What triggers these fears? • The main characters fears are dramatised, describe how they are represented in the film. • How is the quote at the end ‘the trick is not to panic’ significant? And represent the notion that her fears may subside and come to an end?

  11. Extended Response • List the fears that bombard you in your life and indicate whether, on reflection, you think they are real or exaggerated? • What creates these fears? Is it just you as an individual or are these fears exaggerated and fuelled by those around us?
