ENERGY STAR Energy Guide • Summarize available knowledge on energy use and energy efficiency in the drinking water sector • Identify opportunities for energy-efficient practices and technologies that are commercially available • Include characteristics like costs, benefits, energy savings • Include practical experiences of their use and application • Based on assessment of proven energy-efficient practices in the U.S. and internationally • Target audience: plant or system operators and energy managerswithin medium to large utilities

  3. Drinking Water Topics • Coagulation/ flocculation • Sedimentation • Ozonation • UV disinfection • Filtration • Solids processing • Water use & loss reduction • Energy management systems • Pumps • Motors • Compressed air • Lighting • HVAC • Materials handling • System controls

  4. Strategic Energy Management • Organization-wide commitment to energy efficiency • Continuous process of upgrades, operation, and maintenance • Use benchmarks to gauge improvement

  5. Guidebook Status • Initial draft guide is nearly complete • Next step is initial review by technical committee • Distribute draft in September • Provide comments in October (~1 month turnaround) • Need volunteers for this committee (~ 6) • Is the target audience correct? • Need case studies of good energy management practices
