World Environment Day: 5 June 2012 • The 2012 theme for World Environment Day is Green Economy: Does it include you? • A Green Economy is one whose growth in income and employment is driven by investments that reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resource efficiency, and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystems.

  6. The Green Economy and Beekeeping • Beekeeping gives local people an economic incentive for the retention of natural habitats such as forests and plants, and therefore is an ideal activity in any conservation programme.

  7. Why Beekeeping? • Hives can be made from local materials - so cheap to get started for anyone • Not time-consuming and can fit around child-care or farming • Supports income generation and food security • Ensures pollination, improving crop yields and profits for farmers • Maintains biodiversity - by taking care of bees, we take care of our environment. • Selling honey can help beekeepers pay for children's schooling. With support, beekeeping can sustain whole communities.

  9. Then you like bees! • While honey bees and other insects are visiting flowers to feed, they spread pollen from one plant to another. This enables flowers to be fertilised and for seeds and fruit to form. 

  10. Helping the bees: What can your school do? • It’s easy to make your school yard or garden a happy place for bees. You'll be helping these important insects, as well as bringing more nature to your school and community. • You can: • create a small bee-friendly garden with plants that are attractive to honey bees • Try some locally produced honey (did you know that eating local honey can help those who suffer from hay fever) • Find out more about bees and their role in food production
