  4. SOIL • Geologic definition: Loose surface of the earth as distinguished from solid bedrock; support of plant life not required.

  5. SOIL • Traditional definition: Material which nourishes and supports growing plants; foundation of every living thing

  6. Dirt • Soil out of place and unable to serve it’s purpose

  7. Functions of Soil 1. Plant growth-soil provides physical support,nutrients,water, and air (CO2 & H2O) 2. Recycle raw material-Thedecompositionof organic matter returnsnutrientsto the soil for use by other plants.
