  2. Scarlet Fever Scarlet fever is a disease that is caused by an A Streptococcus bacteria. This bacteria is the same bacteria that causes strep throat. Scarlet fever was once a very serious childhood disease and still is but is very easily to treat now. The Streptococcal bacteria produces a toxin that may lead to a hallmark red rash because of the illness.

  3. Is scarlet fever serious? Scarlet fever is rare but yes it is very serious. If scarlet fever is left untreated it can result to infections to the heart, lungs, kidneys, skin and the nervous system.

  4. Symptoms Scarlet Fever usually begins with a fever and a sore throat. The time between being infected and having the symptom will only last for generally 1 – 2 days. The rash usually appears first on the chest and neck, then spreads over the rest of the body. It is described as a ‘sandpapery’ feeling. The texture of the rash is more important than the appearance because that is how we find the right diagnose. This rash can last up to more than a week but when the rash fades, peeling may occur. The rash can last for more than a week. As the rash fades, peeling (desquamation) may occur around the fingertips, toes, and groin area.

  5. Some other symptoms include: Bright red color in the creases of the underarm and groin (Pastia's lines) • Fever • General discomfort (malaise) • Sore throat lines • Swollen, red tongue (strawberry tongue) • Vomiting • Chills • Headache • Muscle aches • Abdominal pain

  6. Treatments And preventions The throat infection can be killed with antibiotics. This treatment is crucial because otherwise rheumatic fever can occur. Rheumatic fever is a serious complication of strep throat and scarlet fever. Bacteria can spread by a direct touch or by droplets exhaled by an infected person. Try to avoid contact with infected people.
