IUVSTA is a union of 31 national vacuum societies that organizes scientific meetings, develops educational activities, awards scholarships and prizes, and forms an international forum for liaison among societies and with international organizations.

Through biannual 'Executive Council Meetings' comprising National Councillors, Officers and Divisional representatives • Scientific Divisions: • Applied Surface Science • Biointerfaces • Electronic Materials and Processing • Plasma Science and Technique • Nanometer Structures • Surface Engineering • Surface Science • Thin Film • Vacuum Science and Technology Members nominatedby National Vacuum Societies

What does it do? • Organises/sponsors scientific meetings: • Conferences • IVC/ICSS - triennial IUVSTA Congress • EVC - biennial • ECOSS - annual • ICTF - biennial • VASSCAA - biennial • Workshops • IUVSTA Workshops (part-funded) • Develops Educational activities • Visual Aids programme • IUVSTA Schools • Short courses • Technical Training Courses • Joint IUVSTA/ICTP Educational Workshops

Awards Scholarships and prizes • Welch Scholarship (now under re-organization) • World Transfer Programme • Student conference grants (occasional) • Prizes (triennial) • Forms international forum for liaison • Between societies • With UNESCO, ICTP, ICSU, ISO • Seeks support for developing countries
