Background • The first key to successful classroom management is advance planning. • In many job interviews today, teaching position candidates are asked to describe various aspects of their classroom management system. • Considering these two points, the course project is: • Culmination of everything you have studied throughout this course and other secondary education courses. • Designed to position you to proactively think through your classroom management system so that you can explain it and defend it if challenged.

  3. MyProfessionalPortfolio Background • It is hoped that you can use the results of this project in a professional portfolio and/or refer to this material in job interviews.

  4. Task • Describe and present your classroom management system in a practical form in your choice of media.

  5. Options • Select a medium which will be most usable and beneficial to you, based on how you might use this material in the future. Choose one of the following options: • Letter to parents. • PowerPoint presentation. • Brochure. • Web page. • Descriptive statement.

  6. Project Submission • The course project due date will be discussed in class and listed on the course Web page. • You may physically submit the project, or you submit it through e-mail.

  7. What Your System Should Address • Be sure to cover at least the following items as you describe your classroom management system. Plan to present at least one paragraph (or slide) for each of the following points.

What Your System Should Address • Introduce yourself. • Indicate your grade level(s) and your curriculum (name the courses). • Describe the arrangement of your room. • List your classroom rules, and how you will communicate them to the students. (If you plan to formulate rules with the class, describe this.) • Describe your attendance policy. • Describe your homework policy. • Describe your assessment and grading systems.

What Your System Should Address • Describe how you intend to motivate and consequate appropriate behaviors. • Describe how you intend to promote a positive classroom climate/atmosphere. • Describe how you intend to prevent inappropriate behaviors (prevent violations of the rules). • Describe how you will react to “common” behaviors. • Describe how you will react to more challenging behaviors. • Describe how you will record behavior (good and bad). • Describe how you will address harassment and bullying.

  10. What Your System Should Address • Describe how you will address substance abuse. • Describe how/when you will make referrals and interact with professional colleagues. • Describe how you will communicate with parents (include a reference to report cards). • Describe how parents can communicate with you. • Describe how parents can address medical/dietary issues. • Describe your hopes for the school year. • Describe any other items you feel important, appropriate, and relevant to this presentation.

Assessment • Content: • Content reflects synthesis of material studied throughout the semester (20 points). • Content reflects categories of information presented in guidelines for project (20 points). • Content demonstrates critical reflection and analysis of material presented (20 points). • Material is well organized (5 points). • Appropriate use of language, including good grammar and spelling (5 points). • Content is thoroughly explained and presented in an understandable fashion (10 points).

  12. Assessment • Product: • Professional-quality product (10 points). • Product uses medium appropriately and effectively (graphics, links, multimedia used as appropriate to express information) (10 points).
