  1. Project MFKHwa Chong Institution Geography LP GE1

  2. What is geography? • Study of Earth and its features, its inhabitants, and its phenomena • Comes from Greek words gê ("Earth") and graphein ("to write"). It means "to write about the Earth“ • 2 Types: Physical and Human

  3. Physical Geography • Plate tectonics: Theory of geology (study of non living things that Earth is made of) • Explain motions of Earth’s surface

  4. Inside Earth • Outermost part: Lithosphere and Asthenosphere

  5. Lithosphere • Broken up into many pieces called plates

  6. Convection Currents

  7. “Movement” Which is something like this… • D:Water is heated at bottom of container • A: This causes water to rise up • B: Upon reaching surface of container, it cools and spreads along the surface, eventually losing heat • C: Cooled water sinks down and the process continues

  8. CONVECTION CURRENTS IN EARTH “Movement” • Heat from the Earth’s interior cause plates to move • The heat causes the rocks in the mantle to melt and become magma • When magma is heated, it expands, pushing the plates away from each other. When it cools, it sinks and brings the plates towards each other • The constant rising and sinking of the magma results in the movement of plates over the Earth’s surface
