Pots, Tubs & Trays need to be recycled to hit 2017 Targets • Places unnatural constraints on Innovation through implication that recycling is the only answer • Anything that anything that assists recycling must also be “de facto” good • Ignores the environmental role that food packaging plays in food waste reduction - concentrates on its situation post-use only • Potentially forces our industry to react to a challenge between very difficult and impossible; consumes unnecessary time and resource; to no real end

Practical difficulties • Lack of consistent collection infrastructure available today - dependent on LAs and WM Cos themselves constrained by pre-existing contracts • Time frame to implement engineering solutions barely enough given immediate decisions • Potential road-blocks in secondary applications • Unsuitable for food use and other cosmetic (Beauty and health applications) as • Feedstock too mixed & cannot be sure of its food-use origin – maybe garden chemicals etc • Possible use of recyclate in first use; maybe behind a “functional barrier” • Apart from PET, most commodity plastics absorb significant contamination • Effect of inks, dyes etc

What has already been done • Significant enhancement to performance of packaging; weight, shelf life, barrier, added functionalities • Success in bottle recovery recycling rates • Designing for recycling where practicable to do so • Driving use of recyclate like rPET where suitability for food-use can be guaranteed • Huge investment in super-cleaning technologies in major converters • Development of IR sortable black trays to avoid them becoming discards • New Technology development - LINPAC’s patented Elite Solution
