  1. “Era of good feelings” & the presidency of James Monroe

  2. A feeLING OF NATIONALISM • Following the War of 1812, the entire country had a new way of thinking and seeing the world. • There was a feeling of nationalism. This is the idea that loyalty to one’s country is more important than the region or section that you live in.

  3. How were things different? • Americans had a new pride in themselves due to many economical, political, and social factors. • As Americans we had defeated the British for a second time and that left us feeling pretty good.

  4. Political changes • It might be very surprising to find that after the War of 1812, the country had united together under one political party- Democratic Republicans.

  5. The Federalist party had not supported the war and were no longer popular. • The Democratic-Republicans had adopted many of the Federalist ideals- stronger national government, a national bank, and high tariffs.

  6. Quote from John Quincy Adams: • “Party spirit has indeed subsided throughout the Union to a degree that I should have thought scarcely possible!”

  7. Economic changes • Before the War of 1812 we relied on England and France for our manufactured goods. • During the war we weren’t trading with the British and had to start manufacturing our own goods. • This trend will continue after the war. • We will set high tariffs to protect the growing American industries.

  8. Social changes • More Americans begin to move west and 5 new states will enter the Union. The U.S. government had dropped the prices on land and lowered the amount that one had to buy to 80 acres from 360. • This means that we have to also increase transportation! If you are moving west you want a way to get there! • The Hudson River School for artists will begin to paint beautiful American landscapes.

  9. We will begin to take so much pride in ourselves that Noah Webster will create the 1st American English dictionary! (We had to add our own spin on things!)

  10. Ideals on foreign policy • James Monroe had a great deal in common with George Washington. • He was the last president to wear a powdered wig and short breeches. • He did not agree with political parties and wanted to support a policy of neutrality.

  11. Ideas on foreign policy • We began to demonstrate our new confidence in foreign affairs as: • *We put a final end to the Barbary pirates! • *We settle the border between the U.S. and Canada and force the British to leave the Great Lakes! • *As Spain began to lose its colonies, we backed the newly independent countries!

  12. The Monroe doctrine • We were very sympathetic to the countries in Central and South America that had newly won their independence and we meant to protect our half of the globe! • Rumors circulated that Spain would ask for their European allies to assist them in reclaiming their territory in the western hemisphere, but we said they would have to fight us first! • We would not allow any more European colonization in the western hemisphere!
