  3. 1. 2011 AMS Spring Western Section Meeting @ UNLV AMS meeting: Saturday, April 30 & Sunday, May 1, 2011 Please apply to the AMS to organize a special session

  4. 2. DMS Residence 2.1 Long-term ISL vs. separate DMS building 2.2 Short-term BEH: Dean Taylor needs our input. Do we want to insist on renovating the BEH classrooms? A new DMS building would impact over 12,000 students annually. Question asked to President Smatresk: “Can the administration really ignore over 10,000 students annually?” Over 12,000 students annually using this building would be significant advertising for an appropriate donor. Step 1: Get the proposal on the university master plan Step 2: Getting permission to seek out willing donors

  5. 3. Enrollments Annual Enrollment – over 12,000 students Spring – 3,940 Summer – 2,517 Fall with 95/96 – 5,738 Fall without 95/96 – 4,744 In-state Fall Tuition estimate – $3,164,925.75

  6. 4. Placement Test June 18 & July 16: 299 registered 237 completed the test Emphasized: DMS is not a testing facility! Don’t have the staff, etc. of the College Board But need to be in control of placement $11 fee began this fall to hire needed student workers

  7. 5. Furlough Leave July 2009: mandated 4.6% staff pay cut Mandated staff furlough leave: one day/month Mandated furlough leave for untenured faculty (more complicated for those on visa) Workload increase for tenured COS faculty appears to be covered Program elimination/evaluation

  8. 6. FMLA Leave FMLA leave Brooke returns October 12 Pat returns early December Dean Taylor provided DMS additional student worker funds: approximately $2,400

  9. 7a. Graduate Assitantships Second largest resource Faculty salaries: over $2.5 million GA salaries: approximately $.5 million PTI salaries: $84,000 (excludes 95/96) 44GAs: Fall 2009-Spring 2010 19 State funded: $230,000 25 PTI-GAs: $264,000

Graduate Assistantships 25 PTI-GAs: 2 classes or 6 contact hours Dean Taylor avoided 25% decrease in GAships Fixed number of College GAships Allocated additional GAs to DMS 5 filled from summer efforts Dean Taylor also provided additional $2,000 Calculus breakout sessions: 25 students vs. 40+ students in the past

Math 095/096 Non-FTE generating through Educational Outreach Instructors: PTIs DMS did almost all the work without additional staff supplied Peg Rees, Vice Provost of Ed Outreach, working to compensate DMS DMS supplied 3 Math 095/096 offices in CDC 7 EO supplied 6 computers for 95/96 DMS is short offices and computers!!! Grant-in-aid is not available for EO instructors

Tutor Clinic Small student fee exists to guarantee its existence Requesting a donor account to be setup for contributions to the tutor clinic Long term Goal: Large donation from one person/name recognition Weekly reports- Sam Possibly located, with windows, near dining commons in proposed building With appropriate funding may be able to expand to include a computer component for online homework and ALEKS/diagnostic testing

  20. Minutes • Meeting of Friday March 13, 2009, 10:30am – 12pm in CBC C216 • Department of Mathematical Sciences • Prepared by Patricia Pablo • Present: Drs. Amei, Ananda, Bachman, Baragar, Bellomo, Burke, Catlin, Cho, Costa, Dalpatadu, Ding, DuBose, Ghosh, Ho, Kern, X. Li, Marcozzi, Muleshkov, Phanord, Robinette, Salehi, Shiue, Sun, Westveld and Yang. Staff: Brooke Drake, Erin McNamara and Pat Pablo • The meeting started at 10:40a with 25 faculty in attendance and Dr. Ho turns the meeting over to Dr. Sandra Catlin, Chair of the Advisory Committee concerning voting information for the elections. Dr. Catlin stated that you can write in nominees for the Chair position. All votes will be done by secret ballot and the committee votes will be done by choice voting. Discussion follows. • The meeting consisted of a series of elections for Officers of the Department, membership on the Department’s Standing Committees and for departmental representatives for certain COS committees. The results are listed below. •  Nominations for the Chair are Drs. Costa, DuBose and Phanord. Dr. Phanord removed his name from the Chair nomination. • Voting of the Chair was done by secret ballot and the final counts for the Chair were as follows: • Dr. Costa (9), Dr. DuBose (15), Abstain (1). • Dr. DuBose’s name will be submitted to the Dean’s office as the choice of the faculty for the next Chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences to be approved by the President. • Dr. Doug Burke is elected by acclamation as the Department Graduate Coordinator. • The Undergraduate Coordinator has 2 nominees; Drs. Bellomo and Dalpatadu. The results of the secret ballot are: Dr. Bellomo (17), Dr. Dalpatadu (8). The new undergraduate coordinator is Dr. Carryn Bellomo. • Advisory Committee: Drs. Baragar, Catlin and Ding are elected by acclamation. • Personnel Committee: Drs. Bhatnagar, Salehi and Shiue are elected by acclamation. • Merit Committee: Drs. Dalpatadu, Ghosh, Ho, and X. Li are elected by acclamation. • Departmental Representative to the COS Curriculum Committee: Dr. Robinette is elected by acclamation. • Graduate Studies Committee: Drs. Cho, Muleshkov and Yang are elected by acclamation. • Undergraduate Studies Committee: Dr. Bachman is elected by acclamation. • Departmental Representative to the COS Academic Standards Committee: Dr. Bachman is elected by acclamation. • Departmental Representative to the COS Research Council: There are 2 nominees for this representative, Drs. Sun and Westveld. The results of the secret ballot are: Dr. Sun (6), Dr. Westveld (15), Abstain (4). The new Departmental Representative to the COS Research Council is Dr. Westveld. • Departmental Representative to the COS Merit Review Committee: Dr. Baragar is elected by acclamation. • Departmental Alternate Representative to the COS Personnel Committee: Dr. Marcozzi is elected by acclamation. • As of June 30, 2009, Dr. Ding will be the departmental representative to the COS Ad-Hoc Committee concerning FIR Policy/rules for Promotion. • Dr. Bellomo moves to adjourn (seconded by Dr. Robinette).
