  2. The Region of Australia • There are 2 kinds of regions-- they are stations and outback.

  3. What do humans have to do in order to survive there? • They have to drill wells in order to bring water to the surface. • They have to mine for minerals. How have humans impacted the environment? • They have impacted the environment due to manufacturing and tourism.

Geographic Factors and Natural Resources • Great Barrier Reef which is made up of skeletons of small sea animals that have pilled up for millions of years. • Flat, Dry Country with a large underground water source called the Great Artesian Basin. • Large Desert twice as large as the states Alaska, Texas, California and New Mexico combined.

  6. Culture • The didgeridoo is the most famous musical instrument from Australia. • Aborigines are a small part of their population with the British controlling most of the country. • They speak English but Aussies use some different words. • They celebrate all British holidays.

  7. Types of Government • British style parliamentary democracy • The Prime Minister is the head of the Government but answers to the Queen of England • Has six states and two territories.

  9. Historical Facts • Australia was first discovered by the Dutch in the late 1600’s • In 1770 Captain James Cook reached Australia and claimed it for Great Britain. • The British Government used Australia as a place to send prisoners. • Gold was discovered in 1851.

  10. Anything Cool • The Sydney Opera House is located here – it is a world icon. • Australia is the only continent native to the kangaroo. • Australia is the only country that is also its own continent.
