  2. Aim: Was the Creation of the Israeli state justified for all involved ? Do Now: Complete the Worksheet about the progression of the Israeli state

  3. The formation of the state of Israel • The modern state of Israel was created on 14 May 1948, 2,000 years after the Jewish people were expelled by the Romans. • The Holocaust in the Second World War strengthened the determination of the Jewish people. • The Balfour Declaration by the British government in 1917, enshrined in a League of Nations mandate in 1920, stated that a "national home for the Jewish people" would be founded in Palestine, while preserving the "civil and religious" rights of non-Jewish communities there. • On 29 November 1947, the United Nations General Assembly voted (resolution 181) to partition Palestine between a Jewish and an Arab state, with Jerusalem under an international regime. • The Jews agreed but the Arabs did not. • The Arab people called the declaration of the State of Israel "al-Nakba“ or the catastrophe. • By the time of an armistice in 1949, the Israelis had extended their territory, leaving Jordan with the West Bank, Egypt with Gaza and Jerusalem divided. • Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians had fled or had been driven out which created tension because they were driven out of their country. • This created the conflict that exists today between the Israel's and Arab's.

Use specific examples from your reading to support your point of view. • Why do your people want this land in particular? • Why do you think your people deserve the land of Israel? • How can we make peace between both parties?

  6. Homework Pretend you are a diplomat and you were writing a petition to the United Nations stating your opinion on whether you feel Israel should be allowed to keep this land or if Palestine should be able to reclaim the land for themselves. Provide specific examples from all documents, graphic organizers, and PowerPoint to support your decision.
