  1. U.S. Customs AES Communication Options Miami, Florida November 15-17, 2000 Developed By: Bill Higgins (703) 921-6312 Bill.Higgins@Customs.Treas.Gov Presented By: Dave Danner (703) 921-6328 David.Danner@Customs.Treas.Gov

  2. Topics • USCS Datacenter • Overview of AES Options • Dial-Up Network • Leased Lines • Frame Relay/MQSeries • Value Added Networks • Vendors and Consultants • AESDirect

  3. USCS Datacenter • Located in Springfield, Virginia approximately 15 miles from Washington, DC • Supports three major application groups: • Commercial (AES) • Administrative • Law Enforcement • Four S/390 mainframe servers running OS/390 • 21 Terabyte (21,500 Gigabyte) direct access (Disk) data storage capacity • Process over 1.2 billion database requests per day

  4. Overview of Customs’ AES Options Data Transport Options: • Remote Job Entry (RJE) • Network Job Entry (NJE) • MQSeries Communication Options: • Dial-Up Lines • Leased Lines • Frame Relay Network • Value Added Networks (VANs) * Internet via Census’ AESDirect

  5. Modem Exporter Modem AES IBM 3720/25/45 USCS Dial-Up Network • 264 Toll-free Dial-Up Lines • 14.4 kbs max speed • Supports RJE only • Session terminated after one minute of inactivity

  6. Exporter IRE Encryptor Modem Modem IRE Encryptor IBM 3720/25/45 AES Point to Point Leased Lines • 100+ currently in use • Exporter provides two 56 Kbs modems and two encryptors • Supports: • RJE • NJE • MQSeries

  7. Point to Point Leased Lines • Trade Benefits: • Improved data throughput • Dedicated circuit to Customs • Not subject to toll-free dial-up modem saturation or session inactivity timeout • High level of security • Provides additional interface options

  8. Frame Relay/MQSeries

  9. Frame Relay/MQSeries • IBM messaging technology • Sprint digital networking technology • Cylink encryption technology • TCP/IP based • Best solution for high volume/high performance, mission critical processing

  10. Frame Relay/MQSeries • Trade Benefits: • Best data throughput • Eliminates the overhead and design limitations of JES batch job processing • Engineered redundancy for high availability • Disaster recovery capability • Integrates into existing TCP/IP network • Integrated component of the Customs/ITDS infrastructure

  11. Value Added Networks • Provide communication connectivity to Customs Datacenter • Provide data transformation services • Provide protocol conversion services

  12. AES Vendors and Consultants • Provide end-to-end solution for filing AES documents with Customs • Reduce or eliminate Exporter involvement in AES communications issues • Support a wide variety of computing platforms and communication options • For a list of AES vendors see:http://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/aes/aes-vendors.pdf

  13. AESDirect • Provided by the U.S. Census Bureau • Submit Shipper's Export Declaration (SED) information via the Internet • Does not require any special software or hardware investment • For more information, see:http://www.aesdirect.gov/
