  1. European Training Session 5: “Deepening the Understanding of Inquiry in Natural Sciences” Preparing to Observe IBSE Using the Fibonacci IBSE Diagnostic Tool for CPD Providers to observe a science session

  2. Today’s objective • To use the IBSE Diagnostic Tool for CPD providers to observe a video session • To discuss and better understand the IBSE Diagnostic Tool for CPD providers • To prepare to for tomorrow’s class observations

  3. Agenda • Read the items and examples individually (15 min) • Any questions ? (10 min) • Watch a class video (15 min) • Fill in the evaluation form individually (20 min) • Discuss your judgements in small groups (20 min) • Whole group discussion (20 min) • Tomorrow’s class visits (10 min)

  4. Read the items and examples individually (15 min) • Any questions? (10 min)

  5. Watching the video (15 min) • Remember: take notes on a white sheet of paper while watching the video. It is useless to fill in the form while you observe.

  6. Introduction to the video: « The Air » These two sessions come after many sessions about air, whose common objective was to make students aware that even though air is invisible, it’s matter and therefore it « occupies space ». Systematically, the teacher asks the students, first individually, then in groups, to justify their predictions before making the experiment, which allows them to express their initial thoughts and reasoning.

  7. Fill in sections A & B of the tool (20 min) • Work individually: do not exchange with your partners yet • Remember: • Provide qualitative evidence from your notes for all NO and NA answers

  8. Discuss your judgements in pairs (20 min) • Identify the items for which at least one of you have recorded NO, discuss the reasons • Identify the items for which at least one of you have recorded NA, discuss the reasons • Make a list of the items on which you do not agree, either on the judgement or on the reasons, and for each one say what is the focus of the disagreement

  9. Whole group discussion (20 min) • Share your judgements so that we can identify the items where disagreement is most severe • Let’s discuss these items and sort them out

  10. Tomorrow’s class visit (10 min) • The objective of tomorrow’s class visit is to provide a context for using the IBSE Diagnostic Tool in a real classroom situation • During the class visit you will take notes and then record your observations on the form of the IBSE Diagnostic Tool, just as we have done today. If possible, fill in also section C • While observing, keep in mind the list of pre-requisites for IBSE and note whether some are not present • Remember to take notes during the session and fill in the form soon after the observations are made • Tomorrow afternoon, we will meet again and analyse the data you have recovered together. So: it is very important that you play the game!!!
