  1. API TR PER15K Status Impact on SC 6 Documents by Kenneth Young PER15K Status - 2/9/2010

  2. API TR PER15K • Protocol for Verification and Validation of HPHT Equipment • Addresses MMS 30 CFR 250.807 (NTL 2007-G07) for HPHT Equipment • HPHT Equipment: • Completion and Well Control Equipment • Pressure rating > 15,000 psi or temperature rating > 350°F • Pressures and temperatures at seafloor • Includes: • Functional Design Specification (User requirements) • Technical Design Specification (Mfg requirements) • Best Practices and Guidance (heart of document) PER15K Status - 2/9/2010

  3. Functional Design Specification • User should provide a Functional Design Specification • Environmental conditions • All loads throughout life cycle • Internal pressure • External pressure and loads • Thermal requirements • Any other loads • Life cycle requirements • Applicable industry standards PER15K Status - 2/9/2010

  4. Technical Design Specification • Manufacturer document Technical Design Specification • Confirms design meets the Function Design Specification • Should address: • Environmental conditions • Loads and characteristics • Life cycle requirements • System analysis loads • Industry standards • Design verification analysis • Design validation testing • Manufacturing process specification • Fit-for-service basis • After market activities PER15K Status - 2/9/2010

  5. Fit-for-Service Basis • The foregoing functional and technical design specifications define fit-for-service requirements. The User and Manufacturer should agree upon and document the basis for acceptance of the equipment. Acceptance may be based upon: • Proven E&P experience or technology, • Proven alternate industry experience or technology, • Advanced design development, verification, and validation requirements, or • A combination of the previous elements. PER15K Status - 2/9/2010

  6. Best Practices and Guidance • Material selection (still being developed) • Design verification analysis • Analysis demonstrates fit-for-service design • Analysis method applicable to failure mode for component • Elastic-plastic analysis recommended for heavy-wall vessels • Fatigue analysis for components exposed to fatigue loading • Design validation testing • Validates fit-for-service design • Tests requirements can be based upon output from FMEA process • Considers affects of combined loads from system analysis • Internal and external pressure • External applied loads • Thermal loads PER15K Status - 2/9/2010

  7. Best Practices and Guidance • Manufacturing Process Specifications (still being developed) • Procurement • Quality Assurance • Quality Control • NDE best practices PER15K Status - 2/9/2010

  8. Gaps – API Spec 6A • Design requirements for large bore flanges • Design requirements for ring gaskets for large bore flanges • Bolting criteria for HPHT flanges • Fatigue analysis criteria • Define HPHT temperature ratings • Address ASME design criteria for thick-walled (R/t ≤ 4) vessels • Address material toughness requirements • ASME Div 3 requires 50 ft-lb longitudinal, 30 ft-lb transverse • API 6A requires 15 ft-lb transverse PER15K Status - 2/9/2010

  9. SC 6 – Potential Affected Docs • Spec 6A – Wellhead and Christmas Tree Equipment • Spec 6A718 – Nickel Base Alloy 718 • Spec 6AV1 – Verification Test of Wellhead Surface Safety Valves and Underwater Safety Valves • Spec 6FA – Fire Test for Valves • Spec 6FB – Fire Test for End Connections • Spec 6FC – Fire Test for Valve w/ Automatic Backseats • Spec 6FD – Fire Test for Check Valves • RP 6HT – Heat Treatment and Testing of Large Cross Section and Critical Section Components • RP 14H – Installation, Maintenance, and Repair of Surface Safety Valves and Underwater Safety Valves PER15K Status - 2/9/2010

  10. SC 6 – Potential Affected Docs • TR 6AF – Capabilities of API Flanges under Combinations of Load • TR 6AF1 – Temperature Derating of API Flanges • TR 6AF2 – Capabilities of API Integral Flanges • TR 6AM – Material Toughness • TR 6F1 – Performance of API and ANSI End Connections in a Fire Test According to API Spec 6FA • TR 6F2 – Fire Resistance Improvements for API Flanges • TR 6J1 – Elastomer Life Estimation Testing Procedures • Bull 6J – Testing of Oilfield Elastomers (A tutorial) PER15K Status - 2/9/2010

  11. Timeline • Several working meetings since June 2009 • Roundtable discussion at 2010 Winter Conference • Complete initial draft of TR PER15K • April 2010 • Initial ballot • Send out – April 2010 • Close – June 2010 • Resolve comments PER15K Status - 2/9/2010
