  1. Writing Formulas and Naming Compounds Section 19.3

  2. Binary Ionic Compounds • Binary ionic compound – compound composed of a metal and a nonmetal • Oxidation number – the charge on an ion • Group 1  +1 • Group 2  +2 • Group 17  -1

  3. Transition Metals - most transition metals can form many different ions so a roman numeral is used to show its oxidation number copper (I)  Cu+1 copper (II)  Cu+2 x4

  4. Writing Chemical Formulas • Although an ionic compound is made up of charged ions, the overall charge of the compound must be zero • i.e. – the amount of positive charge must equal the amount of negative charge

  5. Determining the Formula for an Ionic Compound • Write down the ions of each element • determine the number of each ions it takes to make a compound with no charge • write down the formula using subscripts to show how many of each ion it took

  6. What is the formula for the compounds that forms between magnesium and phosphorous? Mg+2 P-3 3(+2) + 2(-3) = 0 Mg3P2

  7. You Try it!! x4

  8. Polyatomic Ions Ammonium - NH4+1 sulfate - SO4-2 nitrate - NO3-1 hydroxide - OH-1 phosphate - PO4-3 chlorate - ClO3-1 acetate - C2H3O2-1 carbonate - CO3-2

  9. What is the formula for the compound between potassium and sulfate? ammonium and nitride? K+1 SO4-2 K2SO4 2(+1) + (-2) = 0 NH4+1 N-3 3(+1) + (-3) = 0 (NH4)3N

  10. Your Turn Again!! x3

  11. Steps for naming 1A or 2A metal or Ag, Zn, Al? Just name it Name the (+) ion (always first) NH4? Just name it Group 3-16 metal? Name with Roman numeral

  12. Name the (-) ion Monoatomic? - name with -ide ending Polyatomic? - Just name it

  13. Determining Roman Numeral Sn3(PO4)4 FeSO4 -3 ? ? -2 -3 ? Iron (II) -3 ? -3 Tin (IV)

  14. Lets Try It!!Writing Names from Formulas 1.) CaF2 calcium fluoride 2.) (NH4)3PO4 ammonium phosphate 3.) Ni(OH)2 -1 ? -1 Nickel (II) hydroxide

  15. Your Turn Once Again! x5
