Anaerobic and Aerobic Respiration • Glycolosis can occur without oxygen • The basis of anaerobic cell respiration • Pyruvate produced in glycolysis can only be oxidized further using energy if oxygen is present. • This occurs in the mitochondrion • First stage is called link reaction • The enzymes in the mitochondrion then catalyze the Krebs Cycle

  3. The Link Reaction • Pyruvate from glycolysis is absorbed by the mitochondrion. • Enzymes in the matrix of the mitochondrion remove hydrogen and carbon dioxide from the pyruvate • The hydrogen is accepted by NAD+. • This is oxidation • Removal of carbon dioxide is decarboxylation.

  4. The Krebs Cycle • First reaction • Acetyl group is transferred from acetyl CoA to a four-carbon compound to form a six-carbon compound • There are three types of reactions involved • Carbon dioxide is removed in two reactions. These are decarboxylations. The carbon is a waste product

  5. continued • Hydrogen is removed in four of the reactions. These are oxidations. In three, the hydrogen is accepted by NAD+ in the other the FAD accepts it. These reactions release energy which is later released by the electron transport chain and used to make ATP • ATP is produced directly in one of the reactions. This is called substrate-level phosphorylation.
