    1. PreAlgebra III Chapter 6-2: Estimating Products and Quotients Michelle A. O’Malley League Academy of Communication Arts Greenville, South Carolina

    2. Standards 8-1.1: Generate and solve complex, abstract problems that involve modeling physical, social, or mathematical phenomena. 8-1.6: Use correct and clearly written/spoken words, variables, and notation to communicate about significant mathematical tasks. 8-2.2: Understand the effect of multiplying and dividing a rational number by another rational number.

    3. Essential Question Can you explain what compatible numbers are? How do you multiply and divide rational number problems involving fractions?

    4. Review Quiz Write each fraction as a decimal, use a bar to show a repeating decimal. 17/20 -5/12 2/9 Write >,<, in each blank to make a true sentence -7 1/8____ -7.34 1 6/7 ____ 1.893

    5. Compatible Numbers? What is a Compatible Numbers? A good way to estimate products and quotients of rational numbers is to use a combination or rounding and compatible numbers. Compatible Numbers are “nice” numbers that enable students to use mental math to estimate products or quotients.

    6. Compatible Numbers? 68.9 x 21.6 ? 70 x 20 ? 1,400 16 ÷ 2 5/6 ? 16 ÷ 3 ? 15 ÷ 3 ? 5
