  2. What is Webconferencing? Web conferencing is used to conduct live meetings or presentations over the Internet. In a web conference, each participant sits at his or her own computer and is connected to other participants via the Internet. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_conferencing

  3. Webconference Functionality Basic Slide (PowerPoint) presentations VOIP Text Chat Screen sharing/desktop sharing/application sharing Whiteboard with annotation Polling the audience Optional/Advanced Live video Recording Ability to change/add moderators Breakout rooms

  4. 2 Common Types of Webconferences Collaborations/conferences Webinars/webcasts

  5. Webconferencing Products • The Big Three: • WebEx (http://www.webex.com)‏ • Elluminate (http://www.elluminate.com)‏ • Adobe Connect (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatconnect/) • The Up and Comers: • Dimdim (http://www.dimdim.com)‏ • WizIQ (http://www.wiziq.com)‏ • Horizon Wimba (http://www.wimba.com)‏ • Yugma (http://www.yugma.com)‏ • Vyew (http://www.vyew.com)‏ • Web Huddle (http://www.webhuddle.com)‏ • Beam Your Screen(http://www.beamyourscreen.com) • ..and literally hundreds more!! (http://thinkofit.com/webconf/index.htm)‏

  6. How to Choose What To Use? Two questions are crucial to determining which webconference solution to use: What do I want to do? What do I want the participants to be able to do?

  7. Considerations when Choosing a Webconference Product Ease of use Do participants require an account? Anything to download? Self-testing audio/video Functionality you need vs functionality you want! Your comfort with doing the “background” work To record or to not record? This is the question! # of participants Price (if it's a one-off event, check out a trial!!)‏

  8. Potential Academic Uses Guest speakers Team/group collaboration Team/group presentations Faculty or staff meetings Office hours Tutoring Include a group of distance learners in a f2f class Marketing Others?

  9. Potential Academic Issues • Real-time – mandatory or optional participation? • Those viewing a recording are on the “outside looking in” • What happens if it crashes?! • Perspective – throw away those perfectionist tendencies! • Contingencies!! • Webconferencing is usually a 2 person moderating job incase one crashes!! • Communication of alternate plans if crash occurs (new room name, etc) • Tech Support • Technological divide • Services hosted in the US – privacy concerns • Time committment: practice before “going live”

  10. What Next? • Play!! • trial versions of software are almost always available for free for up to 30 days – perfect for that one-off event, too! • Elluminate, Adobe Connect, Dimdim, Yugma, Mikogo and many others all have fully-functional limited seat free versions (for between 3 and 20 people) – they may be all you need! • Contact your Instructional Designer to talk about including webconferencing in your course!
