  1. FARES DATA BUILD TOOL RICHARD MASON – INFORMATION STRATEGY MANAGER, INTEGRATED AND SMART TRAVEL (IST) PROGRAMMME PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND MAAS FORUM – 9 JULY 2019

  2. #onenorth “A thriving North of England, where modern transport connections drive economic growth and support an excellent quality of life”

  3. Pan-Northern transport objectives Transforming economic performance Improving inclusivity, health, and access to opportunities for all Increasing efficiency, reliability, integration, and resilience in the transport system Promoting and enhancing the built, historic, and natural environment

  4. TfN geography • 20 Local Transport Authorities • 3 Train Operating Companies • Over 350 Bus Operators • Light Rail Networks • Shipping Ports and Airports

  5. What is the Integrated and Smart Travel programme? • IST is transforming the passenger experience on public transport by working in mutually beneficial partnerships with the rail, bus and light rail sectors. • By improving ticketing and payment, we are working to make public transport quicker, easier and more convenient; and the preferred choice for travel across the North of England. • It is not smart technology for smart technology’s sake. Our ambitious four-year initiative is: • Driving growth • Improving access to jobs • Ensuring the North is a great place to invest, live and work in. • Supported and funded by the Department for Transport, the programme is being delivered in three phases over four years.

  6. IST Phase overview Phase 2 Customer information, collaboration and innovation Phase 2 will make the same kind of information currently enjoyed by most rail passengers available to bus and light rail passengers. This includes enhanced bus fare, and disruptions messaging information available on an open data hub. A Knowledge Network base to share information with stakeholders, and support innovation ideas to enhance later phases. Phase 3 Account-based travel using contactless payments Phase 3 is the highest profile and most ambitious part of the programme. It will bring a London-style experience to the North, with capped daily or weekly pricing on multi-modal journeys, and the ability to make contactless payments, for example using a mobile app or bank card. Passengers will travel with confidence that they are being charged the fairest price Phase 1 Smart cards for rail Building on existing schemes and commitments, this first phase delivers smart cards for rail travel across the North. This is part of a nationwide programme to roll out smart ticketing for all rail travel in the country.

  7. What are customers telling us? “The transport offer in the North is inconsistent, uncoordinated and difficult to navigate” “How much does the bus cost?” “Which ticket is best for me?” “I have to ask the bus driver how much it costs” “I want an app to plan my bus journey and view fares” “I want information like you can get for trains”

  8. How are we helping… TfN are working with the industry to deliver some exciting open data projects. • Open Data Hub • The creation of an open data hub for the North which will publish (with permission) the bus fares and disruption messaging data sets. • Data will be accessed (API) and integrated in journey planners and other customer facing products, to enhance customer information and facilitate multi-modal travel across the North. • Bus Fares • The collation of fares data, from operators and transport authorities across the North, into a single repository. • Initially concentrating on bus single and returns and day and week tickets. Multi operator tickets, ferry and light rail at a later date. • Data format – NeTEx, which will become the National fare data standard, developed through the DfT Bus Open Data programme Bus Disruption Messaging A solution to create disruption data, from transport authorities across the North, into a single repository. To include planned events that impact bus services then moving to unplanned and other modes. Export - Siri SX data format and to social media channels.

  9. Creating, publishing and sharing data… B2B2C Fares Data Build Tool Users (Transport operators and LTAs) Create User interface Developers and Tech Providers (Apps and websites) Open Data Hub Output Publish System functionality Validation, matching, transform NeTEx Integrate Data sources (TxC, NaPTAN, ETM, Fare Tables) Customers Input

  10. Fares – delivered in collaborative partnership • The Fares Data Build Tool will be delivered first in the North and have the potential to be scaled nationally. • The proposed solution will collate bus fares and rules data and export it into the emerging UK NeTEx format. • The tool will help operators and LTAs comply with the upcoming Bus Services Act 2017 legislation which will require the open publication of bus journey information, including fares data, via the Bus Open Data Digital Service (BODDS).
