  3. How do we document the process of transition? Celebrations/praise with walking, potty training etc. Graduation/diplomas Marriage ceremony Birthdays What about all of the school transitions? How does next year’s teacher know that Johnny reverses letters and numbers? How does the teacher know that when Justin has a meltdown you should sing him a particular song?
  4. Communication/Documentation Teachers talk and share particulars What if the student switches schools? Districts? Documentation records of student progress Did the teacher keep records, pass written notes on how to work with the student? Individual Education Plans How much information is here? School files Cumulative records of student progress?
  5. What is lost in transition process? Valuable information Strategies that worked with the student Educational strategies/programs used Behavioral supports/reinforcements Depending on the disability: Communication system of student (Picture symbols, wait time, voice output device, verbal speech?) Positioning and physical supports ( Where is the switch placed for access? How do we get her in the stander?) What else?

Digital Portfoliospros and cons Digital Portfolios Online photo albums with text using Snapfish, Shutterfly , Kodak or some other online portfolio source Pro: online storage can’t lose it if computer crashes Anyone with a computer can access it Con: Confidentiality, it is on the Internet Portfolios created with PowerPoint or multimedia software Pro: On computer, can email or burn to a CD Can embed videos, photos and audio files Can add other digital files (Pdfand Word files, scanned work samples) Con: Can be lost with computer crash
  11. PowerPoint This is one program that works well for portfolio creation. Photos and videos can be added to a PowerPoint Text can be added to each slide for documentation Sound recordings can be embedded Work samples can be scanned or photographed and added to the PowerPoint or they can be hyperlinked
  12. Collecting Data Organization is a critical first step Creating folders to keep data Right click > New > Folder > Name the folder Organizing folders on the desktop, hard drive, or removable drive Views: thumbnails, lists (Which helps you organize the best? )
  13. File Management Before you begin to gather documentation create a plan as to how and where to save your materials Save data to: flash drive, CD, computer hard drive. Begin to create folders to store files. Create a folder for each student and within that folder create folders for areas you think need to be included in a transition portfolio. (Communication, physical access, assistive technology tools) John Smith- Record John saying words the new teacher may not understand JohnSmith John Smith- Communication John Smith Photos of John using his voice output device + Boardmaker files or photos of the boards.

  16. Documenting Student Skills Evidence of student skills can be documented and organized in several ways. Collect work samples: related to class work, projects, standards of learning, IEP goals and objectives Data sheets: running records, grades Collect photos: Student engaged in activities Photograph work samples to include electronically
  17. Video: Using digital cameras Student performing tasks that lend themselves to video Reading aloud, counting numbers or objects Students with disabilities (video may be better than a photo) Teacher Notes: Anecdotal records Interviews with teachers Charts and graphs of student progress

  19. Work Sample - Print Screen Consider using a screen capture to demonstrate evidence of a student’s computer work. PrntScrnkey (generally located above number pad) Paste the screen capture into a Word or PowerPoint document Use the picture tools within the program to adjust the size/placement of the work sample Print to Pdf allows you to make a .pdf document from anything on the screen

Work Sample- Screen Capture Most screen capture programs allow you to capture, edit and save graphics, text and videos that you can view on your computer screen, from the Internet or software programs installed on your computer.   21. Work Sample - Scanning Scanners are used to import text and graphics into the computer for use with various software applications. Scan student work samples as images (.jpeg) Scan a worksheet and have the student fill it in on the computer (OCR)
  22. Work sample - Digital Photo You can take a digital photo of student work and upload that image directly into Microsoft Office software. This is a quick and easy way to include work samples without having a scanner.

Digital Card Reader If you do not have the Camera software on your computer you can use a card reader Card Reader: Single or multi-slot Take SD card from camera Put SD card into card reader Plug card reader into USB port of the computer Open Folder to view files View > Thumbnails Select photos and videos you want to save Photo file formats : .png, .bmp, .jpg Copy and paste into the appropriate folder

Using Digital Cameras to capture video Digital cameras capture video and are easy to use The larger the memory card for the camera the longer the videos you can take (512MB -8GB) Your camera may not have a speaker for listening to recorded sound during playback on camera Upload video files just as you do photos using a card reader
  31. Video- File formats When uploading your videos pay attention to the file format you are using. Video- Inserting into PowerPoint Once you have the correct file format you are ready to insert your video (.wmv & .avi) Insert > Movie and Sounds > Movie from File > Choose file A prompt will appear when you import the video, you need to decide if you want the video to play automatically or only when it is selected Watch Movie

  36. Audio- Audacity Audacity is a free audio editing application that allows you to record audio tracks of any length. You can add pieces to the beginning or end of the track.
