  1. US BPO Plans R. L. Boivin, S. Allen and J. Terry, US BPO Presented at US Progress Report - ITPA 12 March 27th 2007 PPPL PERSISTENT SURVEILLANCE FOR PIPELINE PROTECTION AND THREAT INTERDICTION

  2. US BPO • The BPO is now entering its second year of operation • Jim Van Dam is the new BPO director (Feb 1st, 2007) • Two groups were formed: • Council: stearing committee (Head:A. Hubbard [MIT]) • Research Committee: coordinate and recommend task formation (Head: C. Greenfield[GA]) • The Research Committee consists of the topical group leaders and co-leaders • Meets every other week by video-conference.

  3. US BPO - Research Committee • First task: • Recommend to the PTL possible ITER Physics Task that the US can support • Second task: • Identify and submit Issue Cards • Third task (underway): • Create a process by which tasks can be executed by the US BPO

  4. US BPO - diagnostic specific task • Perform task(s) that are important for BP diagnostic development • Take advantage of US expertise and/or US interest in BP experiments • Seek clear, identifiable tasks that advance the field • Deliverables • Time scale preferably 1 yr or less • No additional resources presently available • Held first meeting Feb 6th-8th, 2007

  5. US BPO - diagnostic specific task • Propose to create 1 task (for beginnings) • Review measurement requirements for ITER which correspond to US procured packages • Distribute efforts through the working groups (next) • In coordination with US IPO task performers, initiate performance assessment for these systems

  6. Working Groups • Last year working groups were formed in anticipation of specific expertise needs for diagnostic reviews • Microwave systems (M. Austin - lead) • IR-FIR systems (J. Irby - lead) • Imaging systems (J. Terry - lead) • Active Spectroscopy (D. Thomas - lead)

  7. More groups will be needed and volunteers are sought to lead these groups • Expected working groups include: • Thomson systems • Fusion Products (neutrons and alphas) • First Mirrors • Passive Spectroscopy • Others…? • Align groups with ITPA - specialist working groups

  8. We need to establish a strategy for developing BP diagnostics • Best vehicle would be to establish needs and capabilities through a White Paper • Input from community • Present programs do not include such development • Deliver in ~April 2007 • Articulate a plan for new diagnostic development program including BP diagnostics • Take advantage of new leadership at DOE OFES

  9. Next steps • Establish task to review measurement requirements • Assign to working groups • Agree on a template • Meet tomorrow at breakout • Help in reviewing task reports (IPO) • Provide expertise for IT-design review • Expect a follow-up meeting in Fall ‘07 after next round of tasks (IPO) and design review

  10. Summary • The BPO is starting the process of performing specific tasks • Major task will be to review measurement requirements and start performance assessment • Future tasks include • Alpha diagnostic developments • Turbulence measurement • Design review process • Thomson/ECE Te measurements
