  8. Outline Syllabus: • 1. Instrumentation & Measurement • Instrument systems and response. Errors and uncertainties. Data acquisition, data analysis and presentation. Transducers. Measurement of strain and pressure. Dimensional metrology. Testing standards and specifications. Calibration of instruments. • 2. Product Testing • Product testing: categories of product, various performance evaluation guidelines, methodologies. International standards.

Important Dates: • Submission of Pre-laboratory exercises: when you attend the laboratory class • Submission of Assignment One: Tuesday 22 October 2013 • Mid-term Test: 7:00pm - 9:00pm Tuesday 29 October 2013 • Submission of Case Study and Laboratory Reports: Tuesday 3 December 2013 Start working out your studying plan and put it down in your learning portfolio

Pre-laboratory Exercise & Full Report • For pre-laboratory exercise (in Examples and Exercise page 1), you must submit the answers right before starting your laboratory work. • Marks of the pre-laboratory exercise will count 50% towards the overall grade of your laboratory reports. • Each group submits only one FULL report for each lab, except lab 3. The deadline of submission is Tuesday 3 December 2013. • No marks will be given for late submission.

  18. 1. What primary variables shall be investigated? 2. What control must be exerted on the experiment? 3. What ranges of the primary variables will be necessary to describe the phenomena under study? 4. How many data points should be taken in the various ranges of operation to ensure good sampling of data considering instrument accuracy and other factors? 5. What instrument accuracy is required for each measurement? 6. If a dynamic measurement is involved, what frequency response must the instruments have? 7. Are the instruments available commercially, or must they be constructed especially for the particular experiment? 8. What safety precautions are necessary if some kind of hazardous operation is involved in the experiment? 9. What financial resources are available to perform the experiment, and how do the various instrument requirements fits into the proposed budget? 10. What provisions have been made for recording the data?

  19. A bound notebook should be maintained to record sketches and significant observations during both the planning and the execution stages of the experiment. You must record the actual experimental procedures and arrangement.
