  2. Introduction • Sam Houston's State University’s Division of Student Services considers emergency preparation and response critical to the overall safety and success of the students, staff, and faculty of the university. • There are ten separate offices within the division which serve the university community. Each office has developed an emergency response plan that, should it ever needed to be activated, will help to ensure the safety of those students and staff members who reside in those areas. • The University has two overall emergency response plans and one quick reference emergency document that can be found at: http://www.shsu.edu/safety/documents/erpfinalcopy_000.pdf http://www.shsu.edu/safety/documents/epquickreference08final_000.pdf http://www.shsu.edu/administrative/policies/emergency_response/CIMSplan.pdf

  3. Emergency Response Terms • Emergency Call Tree: Telephone process for informing all employees of an emergency or incident . • Shelter-In-Place (SIP): Term used as a safety procedure that is an alternative to evacuation. When implemented, community members are requested to stay put in current location and activate safety measures. • Lockdown: The term used when a room or building exit doors are locked to prevent individual from either entering or exiting without the appropriate approval. • First Aid Kits: A grouping of medical supplies located in a designated location to address short term medical needs. • Automated Electronic Defibrillator (AED): Is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias would could lead to cardiac arrest and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm. • Quick Reference Emergency Response Plan (ERP): Housed in every office and building on campus, this document references the what to do action for various emergencies or incidents which may occur on campus.
