  2. Why should I exercise? Improve prosthesis fixation Decrease the incidence of early loosening Decrease weight gain after surgery Pain free function Improve quality of life

  3. How often should I exercise? Guidelines for adults over age 65(or adults 50-64 with chronic conditions, such as arthritis) Do moderately intense aerobic exercise 30 minutes a day, five days a weekOrDo vigorously intense aerobic exercise 20 minutes a day, 3 days a weekAndDo eight to 10 strength-training exercises, 10-15 repetitions of each exercise twice to three times per weekAndIf you are at risk of falling, perform balance exercisesAndHave a physical activity plan.

  4. What type of exercise? • Low Impact Exercise • Walking • Swimming • Bicycling • Golf • Dancing

  5. Why Low Impact Exercise? Decrease loosening and revision rates Improve muscle performance Decrease post-op weight gain

  6. What exercises should I avoid? • High Impact Exercise • Contact sports • Racquetball • Jogging • Tennis • Skiing

  7. Strengthening Exercises • Minisquats • Marching • Raise leg out to side • Raise leg out in back • Curl heel towards buttocks • Heel Raises

  8. Flexibility Exercises Calf Stretch Hamstring Stretch Quad/hip flexor Stretch
