  1. Classroom Activities for Number Sense and Operations in Grades P-2MTA 2010 Penny Bell-Tovey (HRSB Math Coach), Angela MacGregor & Matt Tucker (HRSB Primary Teachers) Our MTA information is online at http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/bell-tp/

  2. Whiteboards Games to practice number formation and number recognition Roll dice and record Dominoes for counting and early operations Flash dot cards and ten frames and record Form & Find Game!!!

  3. Ten Frames • Ways of counting (Example: How many are here? How do you know?) • Memory game (Example: Show on overhead and students reproduce on ten frames.) • Use dice/playing cards and then record with counters • Way of representing in math journal • Show frame as children arrive in the morning, students identify number as “entry pass” • Bowling – Students bowl plastic pins and then record • Giant ten frame for games and songs

  4. Target Number/Number of the Day(A Graphic Organizer) • Multiple representations of numbers • Promotes flexible thinking about numbers • Ongoing review of important number concepts • Target Number Info andsample templates

  5. Math Journal • Use pictures, numbers and words to communicate math thinking • Supports math development in all strands • Primary – Grade 2 Journal Prompts

  6. Dominoes • Overhead domino pieces for counting/early operations • Count and record • Matching number facts/fact families • Domino Addition by Lynette Long • Match dots with number symbol/number word (different ways of representing) • Domino train

  7. Math Balance • NSSBB# 1000004 ($14.46) • Visualizing number relationships and simple math equations • Showing greater than or less than situations • Modelling repeated addition (multiplication), missing addend problems, etc. • Math Balance information sheets

  8. Two-sided Counters • Shake and spill (All About Numbers booklet) • Fact families • Ten frames • Counting (“Show me 7.”) • Yard sale – counters as coins for in-class sale • Show on overhead and students record what they see on their whiteboards (total or math fact)

  9. Dice • Roll dice and colour matching number on a number grid • Dice on overhead (Show briefly and students share what they see.) • Combining totals and record on whiteboard • Roll to make addition facts and record on whiteboard • One more/one less activities • Fill the Chuteor Race to the Top(Roll dice and colour in spaces on a grid.)

  10. Unifix Cubes • Build towers and find the difference (Roll dice or draw a playing card to determine the number of cubes) • Unifix Cube Math Center-How many of each colour? • Use for measuring (estimate how many to line up with …) • Math Magician game(identify the missing part of a known total)

  11. Sorting & Graphing • Sort objects by colour, shape, size, number (leaves or buttons). Count totals and graph results. Ask questions/interpret data (more/less). • Question of the day (organize and interpret) • Weather Graph

  12. Organization • Math centres • Wall displays • Portfolios • Useful Teacher Resources (CAMET, Math Works, I Get It, Math Chants, Van de Walle books, NS Curriculum Documents and Support Resources), NS Blackline Masters online http://lrt.ednet.ns.ca/PD/BLM/table_of_contents.htm
