  1. Physical & Chemical Properties & Reactions Learning Target 5a

  2. Learning Target • (LT5a): Describe the physical and chemical properties of a substance. Classify changes a substance undergoes as physical or chemical changes. • Meets: • Identify examples of physical properties • Identify examples of chemical properties • Differentiate a physical reaction from a chemical reaction • Exceeds: • Given a reaction, I can explain and defend whether or not it is a physical or a chemical reaction

  3. Properties of Substances

  4. Physical Properties • Physical Properties: are able to observed or measured without changing the identity of the substance. • Examples: • Color • Odor (smell) • Density (mass/volume) • Malleability (ability to bend) • Elasticity (ability to return to its original shape) • Conductivity (ability to flow energy, heat, or electricity) • Insulator (resisting flow of energy, heat, or electricity)

  5. Chemical Properties • Only are able to be observed when the identity of the substance is changed • Examples: • Flammability • Reactivity

  6. Physical Change • Any change which does NOT change the identity of the substance • The same chemicals are still present • Examples: • Mixing • Dissolving • Melting • Heating/cooling

  7. Chemical Change • Any change which results in a NEW substance • New chemicals are created • Evidence of a chemical change: • Color change • Gas production • Temperature change

  8. Example: Paper Change: Physical or Chemical change? ..Why? Observations… Wad: Tear: Soak in water: Burn:

  9. Can you…? • Identify examples of physical properties? • Identify examples of chemical properties? • Differentiate a physical reaction from a chemical reaction? • Given a reaction, I can explain and defend whether or not it is a physical or a chemical reaction?

  10. Example: Bag Change: Physical or Chemical change? ..why? Observations… Mix Solids: Add Red Liquid:
