  2. The Jeanne Clery Act • History - • Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 • Renamed in 1998 for Jeanne Clery • Administered by U.S. Department of Education • Covers all Institutions of Higher Education

The Jeanne Clery Act • Requirement: Campus Security Report by October 1 of Each Calendar Year • Last 3 years of Campus Crime Statistics based on reports to Campus Security Authorities Security Policy Statements Sexual Assault Policies – Basic Victim’s Rights Law Enforcement Authority of Campus Officers Where to Report Crimes How to Find Report

The Jeanne Clery Act • Campus Security Authorities: • Public Safety Officers and Other School Officials Designated to Receive Reports of Crimes • Local Police • Other School Officials Having “Significant Responsibility for Student and Campus Activities” • Professional Mental Health and Religious Counselors Exempt

  6. The Jeanne Clery Act • Major Crimes to Be Reported: • Murder and Non-Negligent Manslaughter • Negligent Manslaughter • Forcible Sex Offenses • Non-Forcible Sex Offenses (Incest; Statutory Rape – under 18) • Robbery • Aggravated Assault • Burglary • Motor Vehicle Theft • Arson

The Jeanne Clery Act • Hate Crimes to be Separately Reported: • Categories of Prejudice (Race, Gender, Religion, Sexual Orientation, Ethnicity/National Origin, Disability, Gender Identity (new in 2013) • Includes all Non-Hate Crimes PLUS Others to be Reported if Hate Crimes (Simple Assault, Larceny-Theft, Vandalism, Intimidation, Any Other Crime Involving Bodily Injury)

The Jeanne Clery Act • Report ANY Listed Offenses Reported to You • Clery Does NOT Require Names or Personally Identifiable Information (BUT . . .) • Nature of Offense, Date/Time, Location Category, and Sufficient Information to Avoid Duplicate Reporting • You DO NOT Need to Gather Evidence – Just Report that It Was Reported to You! • Silent Witness Allows for Anonymous Reports http://go.wlu.edu/reportcrime
