  3. TEACHING TOOLS Do, Look, Learn Mind’s Eye Split Screen Visualizing Vocabulary

  4. ESL Connection • Most teachers are linguistic heavy. • Nonlinguistic is a MUST for ESL. • Meaning CANNOT be conveyed to ESL through words alone.

  5. DO, LOOK, LEARN • Identify the learning objective • Decide on activity • Introduce activity • Participate in activity • Look back and collect observations and share • Encourage students to explain what they have learned

  6. DO, LOOK, LEARN Examples • HandS on group learning • Acting out/ physically representing vocabulary terms • Role-playing • Using/creating models

  7. MIND’S EYE • A pre-reading tool that encourages students to generate mental pictures and use them to read more actively.

MIND’S EYE • Selecting 5-25 key words from passage or book • Words should reveal information from the text • While selective words are read aloud, visualize the story or text • Complete the Mind’s Eye Organizer (see page 133) • Read the text to look for answers of their question, assess accuracy of questions, and reflect • Pose questions to reflect on the content

SPLIT SCREEN Process and encode new learning using both words and images. • Divide content into 2-7 chunks of info • Split screen organizer - let students know that the goal is to draw simple images to capture the big ideas and details • Present a single chunk of content and 10-30 seconds of think time before drawing • Compare pictures and discuss big ideas • Write summary of big idea and important details • Share with the class and revise as needed • Continue to the next chunk of information, repeating steps 3-6.

  15. VISUALIZING VOCABULARY • Students find and create images to represent terms and explain why it is a good representation. • Dual coding is storing information in two ways. The two ways are language and images.
