PDS II : Polydioxanone

PDS II : Polydioxanone. PDS is a monofilament absorbable suture. What type of fiber is PDS made of?. PDS is made of synthetic fiber made from petroleum by-products. What kind of absorption rate does it have?. PDS II is hydrolyzed in 180-240 days. It will last for about 6 months.

  1. PDS II : Polydioxanone PDS is a monofilament absorbable suture.

  2. What type of fiber is PDS made of? • PDS is made of synthetic fiber made from petroleum by-products.

  3. What kind of absorption rate does it have? • PDS II is hydrolyzed in 180-240 days. • It will last for about 6 months. • The wound itself will be supported for 6 weeks. • Not bad for an absorbable suture.

  4. What is the PDS suture used for? • Some of the common usages for PDS suture are: tissue that needs long-term tensile strength; fascia; surgery on geriatric patients; smaller sizes are used on ophthalmic tissue, and soft tissue approximation including pediatric cardiovascular tissue, where growth is expected.

  5. When should PDS suture not be used? • PDS II should not be used for adult cardiovascular tissue, microsurgery, and neural tissue.

  6. When a hospital buys PDS II how is it packaged? • PDS II is available in precut lengths, ligating reels, and free ties. We all know what free ties are.

  7. What kind of cool colors and sizes does PDS II come in? • PDS II is available in violet dyed sizes of 2 through 9-0 and blue dyed strands in sizes 9-0 through 7-0 in various lengths. • Clear sutures are available in sizes 7-0 through 1 with permanently attached needles.

  8. Did you know that PDS II is: • The longest lasting absorbable monofilament  wound support suture with superb pliability.

  9. PDS II Suture • Insertion of the 1 PD II (Ethicon,Johnson and Johnson Intl, Brussels, Belgium) double strand suture on a long curved needle transversely through the distal incision passing through the substance of the tendon and through the same incision.

  10. What did I forget? Oh yes tensile strength. • PDS II tensile strength: 50% retained at 4 weeks; 25% retained at 6 weeks • Tissue reaction is minimal
