    4. Define Disaster Webster’s definition: a sudden calamitous event bringing great damage, loss, or destruction. A sudden or great misfortune or failure. A disaster area – an area officially declared to be the scene of an emergency created by a disaster and therefore qualified to receive certain types of governmental aid … aid from outside sources.

    5. Brief history of each organization Since its founding in 1881 by visionary leader Clara Barton, the American Red Cross has been the nation's premier emergency response organization. As part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war, the American Red Cross distinguishes itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural disasters. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services, always with the aim of preventing and relieving suffering. “The Authority on Cooking in America” The American Culinary Federation, Inc. (ACF), a professional, organization for chefs and cooks, was founded in 1929 in New York city by three chefs’ organizations: the Societe Culinaire Philanthropique, the Vatel Club and the Chefs de Cuisine Association of America. Since our inception, little has changed in our principal goals. We are an organization based on promoting the professional image of American chefs worldwide through education of culinarians at all levels. In 1976, ACF forever changed the culinary industry by elevating the position of the executive chef from service status to the professional category in the U.S. Department of Labor’s Dictionary of Official Titles.

Do you know who your First Responders are – do you have contact information?? Do you have contact information for your local American Red Cross Chapter? American Red Cross         Beaumont Chapter             Serving the Community since May 1917 3260 Eastex Freeway Beaumont Texas 77703                                                                                (409) 832-1644                                                                        (409) 729-1717 Mid-County (409) 832-9476 Fax

    15. How to Prepare Some suggestions… Put together a communication system – be it the old stand by of one person calling – then the next calling – the next calling, etc. etc. Do you have a website ? Update it! At each ACF local meeting, during check-in, place an address and phone number update sheet – constantly update this information. Set up a protocol if evacuated, when safe and from harms way, have several point people, contact these folks and let them know where you have located. Keep a list of where chef members have gone, phone numbers, length of time possibly away. This would be a good time to assess how much personal damage these folks have incurred. This will help in the event immediate aid is needed. Maintain a weather ready radio Plan, organize and replenish emergency supplies for your business, schools, homes, etc.

    16. First Responders… Who are they? Local & Regional Police Departments – Fire Departments CERT – teams – citizen emergency response team State Hwy Patrol Departments National Guard Local & State Governments and all agencies that fall under their governance. www.ncddc.noaa.gov – all comprehensive source

    17. How to become involved Respond to the call when a request has been broadcast. Do you have kitchen space that could be used for food preparation in the event of a disaster? Do you have available mobile kitchen equipment? Example: ACF St. Louis owns 4 mobile kitchens – (4 – 6 burner stoves, upright refrigeration units, steamer, fryer, 3 compartment sink, hot water heater, stainless steel tables, dishware)
