  2. A. Atomic Nuclei Collide • Nuclear fusion- atomic nuclei combine to form a larger nucleus • Inside stars nuclear fusion combines smaller nuclei into larger nuclei creating heavier elements • Plasma- state of matter atoms are stripped of their electrons and nuclei are packed close together

  3. B. Elements From the Sun • Inside the sun hydrogen nuclei fuse together • This is rare on earth • As they fuse they create a great deal of energy • Hydrogen fuels the sun

  4. C. Elements From Large Stars • Large stars also go through fusion • Supernova- explosion that breaks apart a massive star • Earth and solar system came from supernova • All matter on Earth from stardust
