  1. Introduction to Abnormal Psych.

  2. Dreams! Write down a dream that you’ve had that you can clearly remember. Rip it out and submit it! Out of the dreams we went over, why would we consider them unusual? What makes them unusual?

  3. Behaviors Daily Question: Individually right down 2 unusual behaviors. Now, talk to your neighbor, come up with 4 more unusual behaviors. Write down your best ones on the Smart board/Overhead.

  4. Our Bridge into Abnormal Lets Classify these: Put all of these items that you came up with into 3or4 categories. What would you call your categories? Lets compromise: Can we come up with a general name for 3 categories. Lets pick what 3 are the most important. Vote for 3. What actually are the 3 ways of classifying unusual behaviors?

  5. The 3 Criteria • 3 Criteria for Classifying abnormal behaviors • 1.) Deviant – Strange, not normal to society. (Not rational) • 2.) Distressful – Makes the individual’s life more stressful and difficult and clearly creates an unwanted problem. (Internally motivated distress) • 3.) Dysfunctional – Causes problems interacting with a majority of individuals in society. • Now Classify your initial list into these 3 criteria • Question 1: Name a behavior that only fits one of these criteria. Rows 1 and 2 Deviant, Rows 3 and 4 Distressful, and Row 5Dysfunctional.

  6. Let’s Apply • Question 2: Can we name a behavior that fits all 3? • Is this behavior that fits all 3 criteria a Mental Disorder? • Why or Why Not? • A Psychologist would only label a behavior as a Psychological Disorder if all 3 of the Criteria were met! This is KEY!!!! • Activity: 4 Scenarios: • Can we say this person has a mental disorder. Why or why not?
