  1. Customary Measurement

  2. Customary Measurement • The United States uses customary units. Many other countries use the Metric System. • Examples of customary units include: inches, feet, yards, miles, cups, pints, quarts, gallons, ounces, pounds, and Fahrenheit temperature

  3. Tools for Measuring Length • We use certain tools for measuring length. • Can you think of a tool we use to measure length? • rulers, yard sticks, tape measures

  4. Length • We measure length in inches (in.), feet (ft), yards (yd), and miles (mi). • Shorter lengths are measured in inches, feet, and yards. • 12 inches = 1 foot 3 feet = 1 yard

  5. Customary Length • Longer distances are measured in miles. • It is about 1 mile from H.I.S. to Pizza Pro. • It takes about 20 minutes to walk one mile. • 5,280 feet = 1 mile 1,760 yards = 1 mile

  6. What unit could you use? • Would you use inches, feet, yards, or miles?

  7. Let’s Practice!

  8. How many inches are in a foot? 12

  9. How many feet are in 1 yard? 3

  10. How many yards are in 1 mile? 1,760

  11. How many feet are in 1 mile? 5,280

  12. If the ceiling in your bedroom is 4 yards high, how many feet is it? 12 feet

  13. If a turtle travels 10 yards in 1 hour, how many feet can it travel in 1 hour? 30 feet

  14. Name the four units we use for measuring length. inches, feet, yards, miles

  15. Name 3 tools we use for measuring length. ruler, yard stick, tape measure

  16. Choose the best answer for the height of a full grown tree. A.) 3 inches B.) 3 yards C.) 3 miles D.) 30 feet *D

  17. Choose the best answer for the height of a stop sign. A.) 8 inches B.) 8 yards C.) 8 feet D.) 8 miles *C

  21. How high is a ceiling? A.) 3 feet B.) 3 yards C.) 12 inches D.) 10 yards *B

  22. Customary Capacity • Capacity is used to measure the volume of a container. How much can a container hold? • We use fluid ounces (fl oz), cups (c), pints (pt), quarts (qt), and gallons (gal).

  23. Tools for Measuring Capacity • We use certain tools for measuring capacity. • Can you think of any tools we use to measure capacity? • measuring cups, teaspoon, tablespoon

  24. Customary Capacity • We use fluid ounces to measure very small amounts of liquid. Medicine in a medicine dropper would be measured in ounces. • 8 fluid ounces = 1 cup

  25. Customary Capacity • 2 cups = 1 pint • 2 pints = 1 quart This is one pint and one quart

  26. Customary Capacity • 4 quarts = 1 gallon

  27. Customary Capacity If you can draw this picture, you know capacity!

  28. What unit could you use? • Would you use fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, or gallons?

  29. Let’s Practice!

  30. Capacity is used to measure ________. volume

  31. What is the smallest unit of measurement for capacity? • fluid ounce

  32. What is the largest unit of measurement for capacity? • gallon

  33. There are ____ fluid ounces in 1 cup. • 8

  41. Can you draw the “G” picture?

  42. Customary Weight • Weight is the measure of how heavy an object is. • We use ounces (oz), pounds (lb), and tons (T). • We use scales to measure weight.

  43. Tools for Measuring Weight • Can you think of a tool that we use to measure the weight of an object? • scale

  44. Customary Weight • 1 ounce = • 16 ounces = 1 pound • 2,000 pounds = 1 ton

  45. What could you use? • Would you use ounces, pounds, or tons?

  46. Let’s Practice!
