Major social institutions in society: family economic system political system education religion health care

Family as a Social Institution Family is the primary social institution that have performed the following functions: Emotional support Economic support Nurture children Socialization of children Take care of the sick, the elderly and the disabled Regulate, control and channel sexual behavior Human reproduction Critical question: what functions family play today? Why family changes?

    3. 9/1/2012 Functions of major social institutions Economic system: Manifest functions: organize and regulate the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services; latent functions: reproduce the stratification system and maintain social inequality. Political system: maintain internal as well as external order by exercising power and authority. Dysfunction: state coercion, nationalism

    5. 9/1/2012 Vision Statement Religious system: meets social and individual needs: (for individual): beliefs and spiritual support. (for society) promotes social solidarity and maintain moral standard, legitimize social stratification, promote social change; Dysfunctions: causes discrimination, persecution, strife, wars, and hinders social change. Educational system: transmit knowledge, values, norms and ideologies (mainstreaming), provide training for the labor force, and reinforce the stratification system (gatekeeping, and tracking), and maintain inequality (reproduce social class). Health Care: take care of the health well-being of the population, and cure disease (preventive medicine vs curative medicine).

Social construction of brutality: group conformity
