  1. Identifying Variables Worksheet

  2. Vocabulary Independent Variable – the factor that, as it changes, affects the measure of another variable ‘The Manipulated Variable’ Dependent Variable – the factor that changes as a result of changes in the other variables ‘The Responsive Variable’ Control Group – the standard used for comparison of test results in an experiment (normal conditions) Constant – in an experiment, a variable that does not change when other variables change

  3. Situation 1 • For two months ten red rose bushes are grown in a greenhouse and ten red rose bushes are grown outside in normal conditions. The number of flowers on each bush is counted at the end of the experiment. • Name the: IV, DV, CG, 2 Constants

  4. Situation 2 • To help determine the effects of oil run off on plants, 3 plants received 5 ml of oil and 3 plants did not receive oil. The coloration and growth of each plant was recorded over 1 month period. • Name the: IV, DV, CG, 2 Constants

  5. Situation 3 • One tank of fish is fed the normal amount of food once a day, a second tank is fed twice a day, and a third tank four times a day during a six week study. The fish’s body fat is recorded daily. • Name the: IV, DV, CG, 2 Constants

  6. Situation 4 • Three maple trees are kept at different humidity levels inside a greenhouse for 12 weeks. One tree is left outside in normal conditions. The height of the trees is measure once a week. • Name the: IV, DV, CG, 2 Constants

  7. Situation 5 • Marshmallow Muscles – Larry was told that a certain muscle cream was the newest best thing on the market and claims to double a person’s muscle power when used as part of a muscle-building workout. Interested in this product, he buys the special muscle cream and recruits Patrick and SpongBob. He meets with them once everyday for a period of 2 weeks and keeps track of their results. Before each session Patrick’s arms and back are lathered in the muscle cream, while SpongeBob’s arms and back are lathered with regular lotion. • Name the: IV, DV, CG, 2 Constants

  8. Effect of Muscle Lotion on Strength over a period of 2 weeks Strength(# of marshmallows picked up) TIme (Weeks)

  9. Effect of Muscle Lotion on Strength over a period of 2 weeks Strength(# of marshmallows picked up) TIme (Weeks)

  10. Situation 5 • What should Larry’s conclusion be?

  11. Situation 6 • Patrick believes that fish that eat food exposed to microwaves will become smarter and would be able to swim through a maze faster. He decides to perform an experiment by placing fish food in a microwave for 20 seconds. He has the fish swim through a maze and records the time it takes for each one to make it to the end. He feeds the special food to 10 fish and gives regular food to 10 others. After 1 week, he has the fish swim through the maze again the records the time for each.

  12. Situation 6

  13. Situation 6 • What was Patrick’s hypothesis (in an ‘if, than’ statement)? • IV • DV • CG • Look at the results in the data tables. What should Patrick’s conclusion be?
