  3. Cinquain Poetry • 5 line poem • purpose is to describe something or tell a story • designed to entertain or inform • each line has a certain amount of words and certain descriptive/types of words

  4. Cinquain Poetry • 1st line: 1 noun telling the subject of the poem • 2nd line: 2 adjectives describing the subject of the poem (line 1)

  5. Cinquain Poetry • 3rd line: 3 –ing verbs showing action about the subject of the poem (line 1) • 4th line: 4 or 5 word phrases describing the subject (line 1)

  6. Cinquain Poetry • 5th line: a synonym replacing the title of subject (line 1) Line 1 is general Line 5 is specific

  10. Key Components of the Prewriting Stage • Select a topic • Pick a purpose • Choose a form • Consider the audience • Create graphic organizer

  11. Prewriting • Consider the four: • Topic- Cinquain poetry • Purpose- to entertain or inform • Form- Apples • Audience -Teacher and peers

  12. Drafting • Second stage of the writing process • Combined with prewriting to form our Cinquain poem

  13. Drafting • Drafting is putting all of your ideas down on paper • You do not have to worry about mechanics during this stage of writing

  16. Practice Activity Guided Practice(3rd grade) • Brainstorm ideas for a topic • Consider the purpose and the audience • We will use the shared pen technique to brainstorm

  17. Practice Activity • Line 1: name a general topic • Line 2: Brainstorm 4-5 adjectives to describe the topic • Line 3: Brainstorm 4-5 verbs to describe the topic

  18. Practice Activity • Line 4: Brainstorm 2-3 four word phrases to describe the topic • Line 5: Rename the topic using a synonym and be specific

  19. Assessment • It is your turn to complete your own graphic organizer for your Cinquain Poem • This graphic organizer will also serve as your draft

  20. Assessment • Choose a topic • Choose 2 adjectives • Choose 2 verbs ending with -ing • Choose 1 phrase • Choose 1 synonym
